I was looking at their settings and confess I'm confused about
the difference between two settings:
- Default Time Server Type
- Timesync Type
Both settings offer the standard selection of Single, Secondary,
Primary, and Reference.
I've matched both settings to their server (either Primary or Reference)
but I don't know what the difference represents.
Could someone confirm how these settings should be used?
Thanks,
-Steve
I've gone back and 'promoted' one of my SECONDARY servers
to a PRIMARY. At this point, I have:
- All my SECONDARYs pointing to my two PRIMARYs.
- My two PRIMARYs pointing to the other PRIMARY and the REFERENCE.
- My REFERENCE pointing to two External Time Source servers.
How does that look?
Are there any recommendations for 'best practice' on the number of
External Time Source servers listed?
In looking over TID 10011515 and 10060982 and comparing it to my TIMESYNC.CFGs
I don't see any "Directory Tree Mode" setting in our file . . . I tried adding this parameter,
manually, but it disappears when I change the TIMESYNC RESET and TIMESYNC
Restart Flag values to reload the values. Does this parameter no longer apply within
NW 5.1 (or 6.5)?
'Sorry if I'm being dense. I checked our DISPLAY SLP SERVICES but I'm not
seeing any TIME Sources listed.
Thanks,
-Steve

The Default one doesn't really matter, just make it the same as the mainone in all cases.
But your configuration is invalid. You must have either a REF and twoor more PRIs, or one SINGLE only - if you have fewer than about 30servers the latter is easier.
If you go for the REF/PRI model, the PRIs must all have each otherlisted as configured sources (but not themselves) plus the REF only (noexternal sources); the REF must either have all the PRIs (if no externalNTP source is being used for this tree) OR that external NTP source.-- Andrew C Taubman

That config is fine, except I've never seen the point of having morethat one external NTP source, assuming you have a reliable one. If thetwo differ at all then NTP doesn't know what to do. If yo have one andit is unavailable for a brief period (which is all should ever happen tothe reputable ones) no harm is done.
Also, it's legal to have a SEC pointing to another SEC which in turnpoints to a PRI, if that's more convenient.
Directory Tree Mode is indeed deprecated. If you load monitor !H and goto the time parameters you can see all the valid ones. Also note thattimesync.cfg just records some time settings for human convenience, editing it will never change anything. You set them in monitor or by theconsole SET commands, and they are written into the registry.-- Andrew C Taubman
