This sounds like corruption of the dos partition. Have you tried a
scandisk on C:?

I have a client that called this morning with a Netware 5.0 server, over
the weekend they lost power. When they came in Monday for work, the
network was down. The server starts up and goes through the loading
process. It gets a good way through the startup and then states that the
server has abended and will be restarted in 2 minutes, it dismounts the
sys vol and restarts the procedure again and just loops.

When I got to the server I done the following: Server -ns -na, then I
done a loadstage k, loadstage 0, startup.ncf, loadstage 1.

At this point all looks ok, sys mounts, no error messages.

I then done a loadstage 2, I receive the following messages:

XMGR-2.1-9
Cannot allocate memory for NICI configuration data

XMGR-2.1-19
Unrecoverable system error
NICI cryptography services will not be available.

XMGR-2.1-10
Can not read NICI configuration file
NICI configuration file Error -1447

Server-5.0-830 {NMID=2000A}
Short term memory allocator is out of memory.
1 attempt to get more mem failed

---------------------------------------------------------
I have also pulled and replaced RAM, pulled NIC's, removed CDRom, all
troubleshooting I know to do.

I have done a VRepair on the volume and they come back clean. I have
also checked nwconfig and the 2 drives are mirrored and insync.

I am out of my element here, not a novell expert by any means. They
data on the drive is my main concern. My customer does not have a
backup. (He is a new customer)

Any help on this would be great. Like I said before server stability is
of no concern, it is a 5 user network and I we need is the DATA. Is
there a way to obtain the data off of the drives?

From best of my understanding from the web pages I have read, it looks
like the directory services is unable to start. Any clue?

Thanks

Oh, and you find that strange? <Just kidding>

If you don't have a backup, your best option is to copy it from another
server with the same OS and servicepack level. If you don't have one, it
might still be the best option to install one temporarily.

Probably not. Netware volumes are very robust, *much* more robust than
an old FAT DOS drive.

Wow, that is a problem. Is there anything on the drive in c:\nwserver
you can still identify e.g by date? I don't know if there's any place to
download NW5.0 media. Maybe someone here still has a 5.0 server?

Actually, no, it can't be NW5.0 straight, that did not have xmgr (NICI)
yet. It is actually much more likely that it is SP6. Can you see the
date of the server.exe?

Very strange, but you were right. The C partion of the drive is wacky.

All files on that drive have strange charactors ... looks like hebrew.

Now the hard part, how do I get the nwserver directory back? Do you
think the corruption is in the novell volume as well? Customer does not
have the original CD's. This box has been in production for over 10
years, and he relocated a few years ago. When I asked he almost laughed,
then realized that I was seriouse. I have 4.11 on CD, but that will not
help. Is there a download somewhere for this? I have DOS so just the
NWServer diretory would work. Not sure what SP this server was at

either, my guess would be 5.0 straight.

No information can be obtained from the C drive. All names look as
though they are in hebrew or something. there are dates but all file
sizes are now around 36k. I have called the people I know in the area
and 4.11, 5.1, 6 are all available to me, but no 5.0. If anyone out
there has a 5.0 server, service pack anything, I am willing to make a
hell mary pass.

Thanks again for all the help. At least I am not spinning my wheels
trying to figure out what is wrong anymore... now just spinning my
wheels an how to resolve the issue.
