NetWare 4.x doesn't use IP for NCP connectivity - all goes via IPX. So,
you have to ensure IPX is good, and SAP is not blocked.

First, go ahead and use the latest client - 4.91 SP5. It works just fine
with XP and 4.1. It also works fine with 3.12, 3.2, 4.11, 4.2 and later
versions.

Install using a custom install. Deselect every option offered, including
NMAS and NICI.

Install IPX ONLY. Do NOT use IP and IPX, or any of the other choices.
Select eDirectory rather than bindery.

Just a thought but I use a small hub which has a BNC connector so I
can attach coax and twisted pair.

The Home Edition of XP had IPX removed, among other changes made by M$ to
disable it's use in business environments. You must have IPX to connect to
the 4.X server, and will need to upgrade the system to XP Pro to make it
happen....

Try reinstalling the Novell client. Specify IPX-only (NO IP!!), deselect
all other options offered, such as NMAS, NICI, etc. Choose eDirectory
rather than bindery.

This should work with XP home, although it is not officially supported by
Novell.

Check the properties of the NIC; is IPX configured and bound to the network
card? If so, from the client login, advanced section, can you see the tree
at all?

Have you tried clicking on the "Advanced" button of the Novell Client Login
window, then browsing for tree, context, and server by clicking on their
respective buttons?

What does "ipxroute config" from a DOS box on the XP client give you ?

There is no reason why you should not be able to access both. I work with
installations which have and currently do this every day.

The next question would be whether you are accessing workgroups or domains
on the Windows side.

This may also be a question more properly addressed to the
novell.support.netware.client.winnt-2x-xp newsgroup.
