I've had a problem getting my BM VPN connecting via a new wireless router.
After a bit of digging I think I may have found the reason but I'm not sure.
I also have no cure at the moment...
Here's the environments:
VPN connects and works successfully - Using only cable modem
============================================
PC -> Cable Modem -> ISP (Dynamic IP) -> Internet -> BM VPN Server
VPN Connects and seems to log in, but not able to access/ping any internal
servers
========================================================
PC (Dynamic IP assigned by Router) -> Router -> Cable Modem (Dynamic IP
assigned by ISP) -> ISP -> Internet -> BM VPN Server
After reading a very useful guide to VPN found on Novells Support site I
found a section that seemed to indicate that a PC which is using dynamic IP
sat behind a router which is also sat behind a cable modem using dynamic IP
will not work correctly with the VPN.
For example, using fictional IP addresses:
===========================
Say the PC is assigned an private dynamic IP of "192.168.2.2" by the Router
The Router is assigned a dynamic IP of "80.30.20.10" by the ISP
Connecting to the BM Server using only the cable modem, the private IP would
show as "80.30.20.10" in the VPN stats window
Connecting to the BM Server via the Router shows "192.168.2.2" as the
private IP in the VPN stats window
It seems that because Client is showing the Router IP and the Local PC IP as
different the VPN connection doesn't seem to be able to talk directly back
to the PC. Although the VPN appears to be logging in OK. Encrypted packets
get sent to the VPN server but nothing is ever returned (can not ping any
internal IP address).
Now I'm not a networking expert, so this is based on a couple of days
digging about... maybe someone can shed some light? Will I be able to get a
PC using a dynamic IP assigned by a router connected to a cable ISP which
also assigns a dynamic IP to work with the VPN??
I hope this makes sense!!!
