Joe and Chad,
You can make mail route out the GWIA and dir synch, busy search go through the exchange gateway if you set some settings correctly:
install the gateway as usual / let the two side sycn so you have Exchange users in Consoleone under the newly created external domain ~ external PO. Now to get the mail to go out the GWIA add an internet addressing over ride to the External domain, po or user. I use the External domain and have tested it many times. If you simply click the last box under the properties of the external domain on the Internet addressing tab and then type in the domain name for the Exchange system this should shoot the mail out the GWIA.
Here is one more key. If the Idomains are the same it will not go out the GWIA because you have the Idomain in C1 / tools / internet addressing the message will know it is internal and will go through the Exchange gateway.
So with that said if the Idomains for GW and exchange are different then you can make it work..
1) add internet addressing over rides to the external domain and type in the domain name for the exchange system
2) Make sure that the idomain for the exchange system is not in Internet addressing.
There's your GW side. I don't know how to set up a SMTP connector in Exchange to make it go smtp but I have had customer that have done it and know it can be done.

Danite,
Can you expand more on your reply? I'm familiar with LDAP and use it in
several applications (Notes, Microsoft ADAM, OpenLDAP) but what Groupwise
can or can't do with LDAP is something I don't know.
What exactly are the possibilities of using LDAP to address this problem?
Thanks,
Joe
