My real question is, can I (as with NW5*) remove DS from my test 6.5 server
and install that into the production tree as it has been running now for 5
weeks with great stability.
Any points, pitfalls greatly appreciated.

Yes you can just run nwconfig -dsremove and then install the server
into the new tree. That will give you the server object. Then you
will need to use DSrepair to install the volumes and pools into the
tree. Then you need SDIDIAG to sort the PKI side of life and then
PKIDIag to sore the KMOs. Then we have the problem of all of the
iManager and Role based services.
Me, I would grab a NW65 SP2 CD with the Overlay pre-applied and use
that to install the server straight into your live tree. Less hastle.

I have tried upgrading my NW51SP7 server with the same CD's but that is a
disaster so far as it will not boot past loading NLSLSP (see Install/Upgrade
forum)
