eDirectory/NWDS API for Linux

I'm looking for an equivalent to the NWDS API/SDK which exists on
Linux. Using plain LDAP is probably not an option.
Few years back there was talk about this becoming available, but I
haven't found anything on developer.novell.com.
Does the API/SDK exist nowadays?
