I need to put together some procedures for a disaster recovery test that we
are going to be doing with Sungard at an office site facility. Any good
TIDs that anyone could recommend that I could use for reference on restoring
NDS on a crashed server? There are 5 servers that I will have to recover.
They are all NW6sp3, DS8.6.2sp4. Two file & print servers and 3 Groupwise
servers. One of the servers has the Master Replica on it.
Any suggestions or ideas on TIDs, personal experience, etc. is greatly
appreciated.
Thanks

Using VA 4.52 build 277 (32-bit) on Windows 2000 build 2195
I have read through the following TIDs:
10023679
10011467
10011465
10013535
10022911
10077411
10013083
Most of them do not pertain to NW6, I think only two of them do. One deals
with recovering the Certificate Server which one of these servers is.
What are the actual steps for bringing a crashed NW6 server back into an
existing tree? For example, install Netware 6 on the server but do you give
it the same name, same ip address and same ipx # as the crashed server or is
this information supposed to be different? Then do you restore the NDS
information from tape? Then do you restore the data? This is what I am
looking for. A step by step process. I would think that Novell would have
something like that in there knowledge base for NW6.
I will look for the Novell Press info. I take it that is manual that you
can buy?
Thanks

The procedure is not different in NW6

You never restore NDS from tape. Only as a last resort. Instead you use DS
information replicated on other servers. Only special case is if you lose the
CA. For that procedure, see:
http://support.novell.com/cgi-bin/search/searchtid.cgi?/10077411.htm
Specifically:
"In eDirectory 8.6.2 and above, it is possible to export the Private Key of
the CA server so that in the event that the CA server is reinstalled, the
original Private Key can be restored and the certificates (both old and new)
will work together. It is also possible to move the CA from one server to
another. Both of these functions are done in Console1 with the latest snap-ins
installed. "
Please also see:

The book I mentioned is: "Novell's Guide to Troubleshooting NDS
by Peter Kuo, Jim Henderson " available from Amazon:

1) Upgrade to eDir 8.7 or newer.
2) Use the eMBox backup / restore capability.

Personal experience:
1) SSI restores work, sometimes.
2) eMBox backup / restores work, sometimes.
3) Jim Henderson's TUT119 procedure works, so long as you only have one dead
server, not an entire dead tree.
4) Never tried TSANDS to see what a restore using that would be like.
5) Make sure you understand EXACTLY what you are doing at all times.

Except that it isn't. You just created a replica server, holding all replicas of
your tree. All other servers in that tree are now going to complain about not
being able to contact this server until (unless) you put it back on the network
and let them talk to it. You can "split" the tree so that this stops, but you
will never be able to bring this particular server back in to contact with the
real tree.

See my previous post. Know EXACTLY what you are doing before you start doing it.

Depends on how bad the problem is, and what your tools available are to recover
it. Maybe SSI will work. Maybe you can follow Jim Henderson's TUT119 procedure.
>For example, install Netware 6 on the server but do you give

Same.

Data comes last, after everything else.

Yeah, you'd think.
So is it not a good idea to setup this laptop as a server and use it to get
the replica & partition info for recovering our servers? Would you not
recommend this?
Thanks
