dsrepairs without locking DIB

I have always been in the habbit of locking the DIB when running dsrepairs,
and creating a backup copy. There are now some servers I can no longer take
down like that---has anyone ever had a problem with running a dsrepair
without locking the dib? If it finds problems does it then lock the dib--or
simply record lock the entry and fix it and release? thanks...
