SAA4 licensing

We have SAA4 running with an ESCON and a token-ring connection to our
mainframe, also an SDLC connection to another mainframe. The server has 6
PU's defined, totalling over 1000 possible connections.

We would like to expand the number of PU's and extend the life of this unit
because budgets are tight.

1. How do I know the maximum allowed user connections? (I think that our
license documentation shows 635 connections)

2. What will happen when we exceed the licensed number of user connections?
Will the user connection be refused?

3. I believe that HostPrint only uses a single license (with many LU's).
Does that mean that we could use an external proxy / portmapping program to
circumvent the user connection limit? Since all the traffic would appear to
come from a single client address, I'd expect SAA to count it as a single
user.

It is always our preference to purchase the correct licensing.
Unfortunately, Novell no longer sells or supports (patches) SAA - and we
haven't been able to find an acceptable replacement.

1. Type LOAD LICENSE at the files server console.
2. Yes, the user will get a message to that effect.
3. No, Hostprint is licensed per printer LU that is configured for hostprint.
If you have SAA4 and Hostprint2 without a license for hostprint, you can
configure 1 printer LU for hostprint. You need to add a license to get more LUs
assigned to hostprint.
Novell no longer sells or supports SAA but if you have a need for extra licenses
as an interim measure, contact your Novell sales rep and mention my name.

Thanks to your expert assistance, I now know that we have a 256 printer
license for HostPrint and 510 users licensed for NWSAA. My boss is on my
case because she shows purchase records for another 125 users. I'll have to
spend some time searching for the appropriate license disk.

My boss will contact our sales rep.

Are you converting FROM Hostprint 2.0 to something else? If so, will you
be getting rid of your Hostprint 2.0 licenses? Please let me know.
