Recurring appointment reminder

We have employee reviews that are due every 6 months. I have been able to
create a recurring appointment so this pops up on my calendar every 6
months, but I would like to have an automatic reminder note sent out at the
same time the appointment shows up on the calendar to remind me that a
review due. I tried making a recurring date reminder for one employee
review that repeated for the next 5 years, but when I hit send on the
reminder it sent out all of the messages immediately instead of waiting for
each date that I had programmed for the reminder. The reminder should wait
until the day of the appointment to send out a note, otherwise why have it.
I also looked at trying to set up rules, but it didn't look like I could
delay the reminders using that method either. Maybe I'm missing something
here, can anyone help?
