I'm running GroupWise 5.5.5 on a fully patched NetWare 5.1 box and have
12 libraries in use. The original installation of GW was an "express
install" so it would only go on the SYS volume (I wanted it on the DATA
volume but it wouldn't install there).
I want to move the PO from the SYS volume to DATA and then upgrade GW5.5
to GW6. I have some concerns over the documents (there's about 200,000
across those 12 libraries).
I can't simply "move" the PO by copying the entire PO directory
structure to DATA and then amending all the configuration files (I've
tried it - failed miserably. It doesn't work because it was an express
install - apparently a hashed algorithm set somewhere during setup can't
be changed so the PO can't be moved. Actually, GW itself works..I can
get to mail and documents BUT can't run NWAdmin/ConsoleOne and the GWIA
doesn't play either).
So...does anyone have any idea how I can best achieve my goal? I want
the PO to move to the DATA volume (same server), the library's documents
to remain on DATA (where they currently are) and all users/message
databases/folders etc to stay intact. Then I want to upgrade the lot to
GW6.
Any ideas/suggestions would be most welcome.
Cheers
CB
This is one of those horrid "gotchas" that is so frustrating (as I'm
sure you are aware). I'm going to see if Novell can "edit" the domain
database somehow to fix this for you - hold on!

Planning a GW6.5 Upgrade? You need the GroupWise 6.5 Upgrade Guide
http://www.caledonia.net/update65.html
Okay - I am told that if you install the GW6.0 ConsoleOne Snapins that
you can move your domain/po with them even though you had an express
install earlier.
Thanks for the info. Am I right in my understanding then that I should upgrade first and then do the move? ("if you install the GW6.0 ConsoleOne Snapins ... you can move your domain/po"). This must mean that something about the GW 6 upgrade overwrites the express install "no, you can't move that!" problem!!! :o)
Is the move so simple as to physically move the domain/po directory structure from one volume to another and change all the configuration files? (I always feel it can't be that easy!)
Can you foresee any problems with the document store? I'm thinking not as they're not actually being moved...although any documents which have been archived are now living back on the SYS volume as this is where the archive process seems to put them. Should I consider un-archiving documents before attempting the move?
Thanks again for your help.

I don't think you have to upgrade first actually - they just said the
6.0 Snapins would do it - but not having actually tried it, I can only
guess.
Really it is as simple as moving the files and changing the locations
in C1 and the startups. For the GWIA you often have to toggle the
"directory" in the GWIA settings to get it to see the new location.
Document storage locations shouldn't be a problem at all - especially
since they are already where you want them.

Keep us informed!
Upgrading the ConsoleOne snapins to 6 doesn't seem to have made any
difference to administration - ConsoleOne (and NWAdmin) still won't
recognise the new domain/post office and TID 10065987 suggests opening
an incident report and sending wpdomain.db to Novell, I guess to be
manually edited to see the new domain. That's a pain.
As far as all the other connectivity goes though, everything looks
okay. We were not previously able to use IP (no idea why, it just
wouldn't work), but now we can so I'm pleased about that!
I'm concerned about a couple of messages that have turned up in the
DEFER directory following the upgrade. These appear to be directed
inbound as responses that a mail item has been unable to be delivered.
I've tested this by sending a mail item out to an address I know no
longer exists and instead of getting a return response to my mailbox, I
find the response in DEFER. I've only just noticed it, so I've yet to
figure it out.
All the library files are intact and performing as normal.
Thanks again for your input and suggestions.

This can typically be fixed with a route.cfg file - this goes in the
wpgate/gwia directory and looks like this:
yourdomain.com [123.123.123.123]
this should be the private IP address of your GWIA.
Firstly, I had to recreate MAIL\gwdom\gwpo on the SYS volume and put a copy
of the wpdomain.db and wphost.db files in their appropriate places. There
is nothing else in this directory structure - everything else now lives on
the DATA volume.
Users are able to work just fine - they don't see any difference but doing
this has allowed me to at least connect to a domain via ConsoleOne. Sadly,
it's the wrong one but hey, what can ya do?! What it does mean is that
I've been able to turn the post office indexer on and off and it's happily
indexed files.
What really worries me is that both copies of the wpdomain.db files are
being updated (the date/time stamps are constantly changing). I can't
quite figure out though what process is updating which file. But it leads
me to think that I'm gonna end up with a really unstable system. I'm too
nervous to try adding a new user (or actually doing anything to any other
existing user) so I need to know....
what do I do to make ConsoleOne see the right domain file at the right
place? And how do I know what's in the SYS version and what's in the DATA
version?
Any suggestions (clean ones, please!) would be greatly appreciated.
Yours in great nervousness,
CB

So now I know that the correct database is being updated and the
additional mail structure under SYS has been thrown away and all is
working very well in the land of GW6 and I'm a happy bunny!!
