First, have a look at tip #15 at the URL below.

What stats are you seeing in clntrust on the server?

Second, what about setting things up so that server does not have to
authenticate? You could either set up 'selective proxy authentication'
(Authenticate only when.... Option), with access rules that allow the
server's IP address to URL's. Or set up filter exceptions to just
allow the server out without using proxy at all.
