testing a dos connection from withing a program

I am developing a dos application in c, which
needs to write files to a novell server.
Currently we test for the existence of the file
on the server before each write operation. The
problem is, that if the connection is lost, we
get the "abort, retry, fail..." screen. The
systems that the app will be running on are
unattended, so this is unacceptable. Does
anyone know a way to test the connection? A
simple ping command from novell perhaps?
