Nightly backup runs to two tapes - sometimes

We're looking at a (Compaq) NetWare 5.1 SBS server that serves 20
users. It's been running various versions of NetWare for nearly 4
years without any major problems, until recently: the nightly backup
(to DAT12/24) started asking for a second tape every few days or so.

Now before you ask, there's only 8Gb of data on the server, and
there's nothing major been dumped onto the server that wasn't there 6
months ago (the server doesn't do much - GroupWise, file/print and
that's it). We've replaced the tape drive with a known good model,
switched ArcServe to BackupExec and used brand new tapes, but nothing
makes any difference.

The really annoying thing is that it doesn't happen every night. We'll
get 4 nights good backups, and then the next will fail. And then it'll
run for 2 days. There's no pattern or reason.

Anyone shed any light?
