Hi,

The only problem with LFN support on a server is that quite a few people do
not have enough ram.

The rule of thumb we use around here is 16 MB of ram per gigabyte of volume
space. 12 MB of ram per gigabyte of volume space thereafter rounded up to
the next ram increment:

i.e. 9 gig of volume space.

16 MB + ( 12 x 8 ) = 16+96 = 112 or 128 MB ram required

If you need information on how to start LFN support for a volume, then that
is easy:

load os2.nam
add name space os2 to "the volume you want LFN support added to" i.e..

add name space os2 to userdata

and that's it.

Not sure what you are looking for here -- the subject indicates you are encountering a
problem with this? Is this so.

The standard approach to adding long file names.

1) Make sure you have adequate RAM on the server (and adequate depends on a few
variables but primarily is related to the size of the volumes you are currently
supporting).
2) Make sure you have adequate space on the volumes -- long name space does take
more disk space.

3) Have current updates in place on the server.

4) Then add the long file name support (the update for NAM312 includes the directions
for how to do this.

load os2.nam--> loaded and worked ok

add name space os2 to "the volume you want LFN support added to"

any ideas on the syntax of that or how to do it???
is this command placed in autoexec.ncf or startup.ncf
?

thanks

Hi exy,

In this demonstration the volume that will have LFN support added to is
named "userdata"

After you've loaded os2.nam you type the following command at the console:

"add name space os2 to userdata:"

That is all that is required. Nothing need be added to the startup.ncf or
autoexec.ncf file, although I do add the load os2.nam as the last line in
the startup.ncf file so that I know that LFN support has been added to the
system somewhere.

Hi again,

Do not use the quote marks, but the command bracketed by them also.

This will work just fine:

add name space os2 to sys

Note, you do not need to restart the server, you will need to reboot the workstations to
see the change.
