Volume won't mount

Not a cry for help, more a possible fix if all else fails!
One of my customers had a NW3 data volume that would not mount. He had
done several vrepairs with no errors, but still the volume would not
mount. All the TIDs said "run vrepair until no errors. If it still
won't mount, delete volume, recreate it and restore from backup." My
client had not backed up for quite some time....
The error related to "FAT chain links", so as FAT is stored in RAM, and
with nothing to lose at this point, I got him to dismount SYS and try
mounting the data volume. This worked, and SYS then mounted OK as well.
He has a faulty stick of RAM.
Hope this will be of use to someone.

Thanks for the information. As an aside, did you run a low level verify on
the drive from the controller?
