Anyone do this or is it insane? It's being discussed here...

Remind the folks that fire proof is no gaurentee of data safe. Most
fire proof storage would leave a data tape a broasted pile of
nothingness. That being said, we are doing some onsite data storage in
this department using a fire proof cabinet rated for data storage.

I do but also take the previous nights backup home and our controller
takes home the weekly backup.

We keep ours in a safe, fireproof vault (owned by an outside company) that
is off-site.

They prolly won't catch on fire, but they melt when it gets hot. Fire
safe's usually guarantee paper.

take mine home and stick em in the gun safe, that way when the fire cooks
off the ammo it'll blast the heckabus out of the melting tape.

(in reality we are about to start using a offsite storage facility to take
the weeklies offsite)

The bank on the other side of the street has a lockbox for $50 a year or
something cheap like that. The only downside is when I needed one at
oh-dark-thirty.

I do without a second thought to it. Of course the safe is a commercial
class B fireproof up against a sheet rock wall with nothing behind it,
nothing above it and another class B safe up against one side of it and the
safe itself weighs over 6000 lbs. Kinda hard to warm that much mass without
a lot of fuel.

What you want is a media safe. Its a fridge sized thing. ~$1-5K
depending on size and temperature rating. Most keep the interior temp
below 125F. We keep our backups in one of these located in a different
building.

I used to work at a place that did this... but we ALSO sent
copies offsite at a secured location.

Thanks all for the input. Looks like the answer may be to keep some of
the tapes on site in a big UL Class 125 certified box.
