Today, I read something that initially surprised me. This excerpt is
from an article by J. author Jen Kramer:

> Heidi Stanclift wrote an excellent explanation to a client the other
> day, who asked about a migration [from ver. 1.5 to ver. 2.5]:
>
> > "We are indeed reseller hosts, for Rochen Hosting. The issue with
>> keeping 1.5 sites on our server is that as resellers, we are only
>> allowed X attacks before Rochen shuts us down. That would shut down
>> our business. Therefore, we have made a business decision that no
>> Joomla 1.5 sites will stay on our servers past 2012."

> 4Web is security-conscious. A hacked site on our server would affect
> all other sites on that server as well. This is not fair to our other
> clients. Since we manage projects as they come in, a hacked site is a
> big disruption to the way we do business. The best way to prevent
> this problem from happening is to keep all sites up-to-date with the

You can find Jen Kramer's article here:

After mulling Rochen's policy for just a few seconds, I understood
Rochen's rationale, and believe that this policy probably makes sense.
Indeed, I am now more likely than ever to choose Rochen as my J. host
notwithstanding Rochen's higher prices.

Sincerely,

This is in keeping with Rochen's approach.
A few years back, I attempted to use them for a client who had a 1.0 site. They required conversion to 1.5 within a tight timeframe.
At that time, conversion was not the client's priority so a different hosting provider was used.
I eventually did get them converted, but it took half a year longer than Rochen was willing to allow.
They do a hard stop on space, so a client putting up webinar files causes problems with running an Akeeba backup if suddenly the space does not fit in their plan. Buy enough space, no problems.

I agree with Jen's article.
It *is* difficult to convince clients to spend money on upgrades when they don't think they *need* it.
It is much easier if we can package it with other benefits, e.g., the new functionality they want requires the upgrade.
I do like her model - tie it to hosting. Unfortunately, some clients come with their own hosting preferences.
