I have Joomla version 1.5.20. How do I upgrade to latest version of
Joomla? Is it even necessary for using the latest extensions and
things? Should I just start from scratch since my site is nowhere
near complete. I started on one years ago and never got close to
finishing.

If you are wanting to upgrade to the latest in the 1.5 series, the easiest way is to install Admin Tools from AkeebaBackup. It has a feature that will upgrade Joomla for you with a click of a button.

If you are still developing the site, you should seriously consider using Joomla 1.7. If you are still pretty early in the site and it is still pretty small, you might start from scratch. But you can also do a migration of your existing site to Joomla 1.7. There are some different tools out there to help with the migration.

The main thing to look at are the extensions that you're using to find J1.7 compatible ones, the template, and then any customizations.

Here are instructions for the migration:

http://docs.joomla.org/Migrating_from_Joomla_1.5_to_Joomla_1.6

I just migrated a site from 1.5 to 1.7 using the JUpgrade extension mentioned in the article. It did a generally good job, but it changed all of my menu Itemid's and changed the order of my menu items. So I had to go and find all of my internal links and update them and reorder my menu items. Other than that, the migration went pretty smoothly.

Hope that helps,
Don

Depending on your timeline, if you are still developing the site, I'd even go a step further and develop in 2.5 beta with anticipation of the stable release beating you to launch. It really depends on how many components you are dumping in and what their compatibility is. However, 2.5 is the next LTR and it is currently being tied in a bow. There is no point in investing in 1.7, if it's possible to look ahead.

And as a clarification, Joomla 2.5 is the same as Joomla 1.8… They are just switching to a new numbering system. If you choose to develop in Joomla 1.7, it should basically be a one-click upgrade to 2.5. The plan is that Joomla 2.5 will be completely backwards compatible with Joomla 1.7 and so the extensions should work on either.

Just a warning: There are a lot of posts out there that suggest using
Mattias Aguirre's jUpgrade tool to convert a 1.5 site to a 1.6/1.7/2.5 site.
Don't. It worked early on but it's been broken for awhile and I have been
told that Mattias isn't actively coding it. There's another utility called
spupgrade that you can get to do the conversion; it's not free but it works.

Anthony,

I think that I agree with some of your sentiments, but I chose a
different method. Like Kevin Harris, I, too, am a J. "newbie," and began
developing my first site shortly after the "bug squashing event" in
early December, during which event I concluded that I should probably
develop in ver. 1.7.3 (the latest release as of early December), rather
than 1.5.

There were several factors behind this decision. First, my
understanding is that there are almost no differences between ver. 1.7.3
and ver. 2.5, release candidate (RC) 1, which will be released on
Tuesday, 24 January. Hence, I do not expect any difficulty in upgrading
from 1.7.3 to 2.5. Is my understanding correct?

Second, many extensions have already been ported to ver. 1.7, and, due
to the lack of significant differences between those versions, an
extension that works on 1.7 will probably also work on ver. 2.5. Is that
correct?

Third, as of that time (early December), I feared that I might have
significant difficulty in upgrading a ver. 1.5 site to 2.5. I reasoned
that I would likely encounter less difficulty _overall_ if I began
development in 1.7 notwithstanding that that version was very much a
"moving target" and not at all stable. As of that time, the J. core
developers were making daily changes to 1.7's source code (mostly bug
fixes).

If I were beginning development today, rather than in early December,
then I might just wait for the issuance of RC 1 on Tuesday.

See my further comments below.

It wasn't perfect but it did convert at least sufficiently well that I used it.
Do you know what was broken?
As Don said, I found that menus / ordering were messed up but that was relatively easy to fix.
Was there anything more serious we should be looking out for?

Do you know if this will do any extensions? jUpgrade advertised that it did some, but that did not work (e.g., CB).

A number of people have also said that internal links didn’t pull through for them. The bigger the site, the more of an issue that will be.

Just a small correction: 2.5.RC1 was actually released yesterday, if you'd
like to test it. It replaced 2.5.b2. Tuesday 7/24 should bring us the stable
release, i.e. 2.5.0.

What I just learned today was that the ACL on the site I just upgrade is messed up (from JUpgrade upgrade). It worked fine for me as super admin. But when an admin logged in, they couldn't edit anything and they should have been able to edit everything.

I'm still trying to figure out how to fix it. The global permissions look okay, but the articles seem to be set not to be editable. I'm working on confirming if there is something wrong with the Articles themselves or if there is something deeper effecting it.

Don, just FYI... I tested a bugfix for the problem you describe during J2.5 PBF last year. I would think since it tested fine that it should be in the current RC, but maybe not. Can't recall the tracker number or I'd check. So that could be a problem either in the Joomla version you're using or old logic in the upgrade tool that carried this old bug into a newer Joomla version.

I've got several clean installs of J1.7 and it has never been an issue. As far as I know, it has only been an issue for this upgrade. My first guess is it is an issue with JUpgrade but won't know for sure until I find the actual problem. I'll look for that tracker item though.

Thanks

It was a problem with the 2.5 release candidate. Don't know if any earlier versions were affected.

Don, yes, ACL being badly messed up is apparently a known bug of jUpgrade, and just as Bruce said, it’s because of ACL changes dating to sometime in the 1.6 series (I got different feedback on the “since when?” question.)  This tool comes recommended: http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/migration-a-conversion/joomla-migration/15609

I have only done two migrations so far and switched from starting sites in 1.5  only after 1.7.3 was released. I’m guessing my inexperience shows!

I think I'll give that one a try for my next migration.

If you upgraded via JUpgrade, a quick fix is found at :

It is basically a query to override the rules for each "asset." The challenge with this approach is that it hard-codes the permissions for each article and so I don't think you can control them at the global level any more (for existing articles anyway). I think new articles would be controlled through the global permissions.

For the categories, you can just go in and save the category without making any changes with your super admin user and it straightens it out without running the queries in that forum post.

But that doesn't work for the articles.

It looks like the issue is related to the #__assets table. There are three fields that JUpgrade doesn't set properly: parent_id, level, lft, and rgt. The 'lft' and 'rgt' fields seem to be what controls the global access, or at least manually changing those made the item editable.

But you can't update those fields with a simple query. When you add a new article, the parent row also gets updated. I'm going to have to dig deeper into the core code to see how it is done in the cms.

My PowerPoint slide are available for download from the www.novajoomla.com website. You need to log in, then they are in an article under Minutes on the main menu.

The next meeting is again at Kings Park Library in Burke on Thursday, Feb. 16th.  Danie Bierman will speak on E-Commerce.  I put it on Meetup and on the site. Danie, let me know if there is more you'd like to add and we can get that up.

Maybe March we can go back downtown to PicNet or another DC venue. Suggestions?

Dorothy, I was very impressed by those slides! Very complete, lots of good info. Would you mind if I reach out to the Joomla! Community Magazine team and see if they’d like them as content for that site?

I’d be grateful if there’s an opportunity to meet in DC.
