A date for your diaries - Saturday 12th Feb 2011

Very embryonic planning stages at this point but...

Hackspace Open Day - from about 10am

The idea is to showcase the hackspace and the things we do to get both
interest, support and members. We'll set up a number of activities on
the 1st floor including:

- Soldering workshops with kits etc
- Have a go at Lock Picking (Tony?)
- Rubik's Cube demo (Michael?)
- 3D Printing demo (Matt?)
- Arduino Demo and have a try
- Presentation on the hackspace
- Marble Run?
- Laser Maze?

If we can setup a number of activities maybe even get some of our
friends from other hackspaces to come along and show some projects off
and basically introduce folks to the hackspace idea.

In the evening I thought we could have a social in the space with
drinks. We'll invite people including council people, press, Student
Society organisers, Art Org folk and other hackers from other spaces
etc and have a bit of a presentation at the start then something far
less formal later on.

Why?
The idea is to show case the hack space and the maker/hacker way of
life let people know we are here and try and get more members and
interest as well as have a bit of a laugh into the bargain. We can
treat the whole thing as a bit of a launch or space warming depending
on how you want to look at it.

Please do share your thoughts and ideas and keep this topic going.
Thanks

Dominic

I'll be there. I want to start coming to these things (it's my geeky duty) so I guess an open day is a great idea. Plus, hey! party!

Add this in:

- Knitting with not-yarn. Maybe I'll bring garden twine and show people how to make planters, maybe I'll do the plastic bag knitting thing, maybe old clothes, something like that.

I'll get Knit Nottingham to donate cheap plastic 12mm needles, and we'll let people go crazy.

Kate

That's a great idea. I forgot about the knitting... you can also iron
plastic bags into quite an effective matterial for making other stuff
too. I made a kite out of them.

I'll invite all the Knit Nottingham crowd on principle... purhaps you
could also liase with the Girl Geek Dinner people... though no doubt
I'll be putting the propagnda machine into over drive before then
anyway....

hackaday just posted this automated knitting machine made from old printer parts.

My interest in knitting has just increased 1000-fold. I need to add this to my ever-increasing list of 2-do hacks
