On Saturday 10th March 2012 Nottingham Hackspace will be running a
soldering table at Wollaton Park for the Science in the Park event.
I'll be leaving Hackspace about 10a.m. I have one spare seat.

If you’d like to come along and get involved please let me know. I
will be taking my van along with all the soldering stuff and selling
flashy badge kits. If you like flashy badge kits let me know.

Now is the time that if you wanted to make a flyer to promote your
event that you should do it and have them copied or whatever so I can
take them. Unfortunately I no longer have access or time to do that
sort of thing  sorry guys.

Here is a link to the event

I'll go along, but I'll take the bus over to Wollaton hall rather than take up that seat.

So I'll probably show up a bit later. And I'll print out a pile of Craft Night flyers to take along.

Also, to point out if you missed my other email, I am trying to get the bookmarks ready for then. Less a question of them being ready, more a question of me being at the space to receive them.

The banner will be ready also.

I was thinking I would like to attend the event, obviously having access to a car seat makes it easier for me to get there, I can get a train over, then walk over to meet you at the space.

I will double check if Hannah wants to come, as if so, I will obviously come down in the car with her. If not then I would like to claim that space.

Jake, let me know if you need cover at the space for deliveries on other days.

I might cycle over on the 10th.

Thanks for the offer, the main likely hood will be delivery on the Tuesday, Thursday or Friday.

If one of those days is specifically more easy for you, then I can let them know when I ring up to chase later today. (if they can not deliver Monday/Wednesday)

In future I highly recommend NOT using Hackspace as a delivery address.

Any clarification on why not?

Because I really do not like the idea of carrying all that printed matter and the banner on the train then half way across nottingham?

Oh sorry Jake yes I understand you'd not want them to your home + train.

When I lived in Nottingham I had everything delivered to my workplace. I'd suggest asking on the list (next time) to see if there is a suitable alternative.

The main issue with Bizspace is that there are about 9 ways in so you never know which one a courier will choose. If they are feeling lazy or get to the main office and no one is in they'll dump an out card or worse the packet somewhere that no one will find or will get taken or binned.

I'd highly recommend making a few signs for the various doors telling then who they can call or which door to use.

Do mail me the costs and your account details and I will transfer you the money for this stuff!

Yeah, I understand that pain. For the most part a delivery like this normally involves the driver having my mobile number, in which case I can normally meet then at street level.

I think if I was ordering from a big company say ebuyer, I would not get it delivered to the space, just because a non direct driver is likely to just dump something, or leave a note.

My sense of dates and times are way off again.

I can't be at Wollaton Hall, unfortunately. (and this is my SAD FACE because SCIENCE.)

But I'll still have a pile of Craft Night flyers that I'll bring in today that can go to the Science Festival.

I believe that, when a driver starts work at Parcelfarce, their cruel
masters issue them with a prosthetic hand made of the softest
eiderdown. Equipped with this feathery limb, he or she is ready to go
out delivering parcels.

Holding your parcel in their normal human hand, they then stand
outside your abode, gently wafting the feather hand up and down your
front door. If you're lucky enough to press your ear to the door while
they're stood there, you might detect the delicate "swooosh" sound and
possibly their faint sobs of disappointment at being unable to attract
your attention.

Eventually, after perhaps an hour of fruitless swooshing and with a
heavy heart, the delivery guy/gal writes out a card. Blinking away the
tears they pop it through your door and then vanish instantly.

Next time you receive one of these cards, don't curse. Instead, think
of the poor soul who wasted their morning wafting in desperate silence
outside your door, unable to rouse you from your hair-trigger
parcel-alert.

Great news everyone, just got an email telling me the bookmarks are ready to be collected. Planning to bring them home, then bring over enough for this event.

Also the banner is now on the shelf in the members room of the hackspace. So we are all set for looking professional and all that shizam.

Just been discussing this with my wife, and we have decided that we will both drive down for the event (only 25 minutes from where we are).

This means the spare seat I had bagged in Dominic's car is now available again.

I know you said you are heading off from the space at 10, but what time do we need to be at the hall for? Also do we need to grab an exhibitors pass or anything like that?

Seen as I am not going to be at the hackspace before then, can someone ensure they pick up the nottinghack banner that I rushed to get done in time? It is on the shelves in the members room.

Seen as we are doing a soldering table I also plan to bring some of my music making devices for people to play with (if you think it suitable) the noise will help to being interest over to the table I think. As well as showing people what scope there is for soldering projects out there. I also have a Brain Machine which is another nice thing for people to play with.

Just to say thanks to everyone who helped at the event today, I think it went really well, it was very rewarding teaching so many people to solder. A quick estimate is that we taught maybe 50+ people to solder.

I think me and Dominic plan to write up more of a analysis of the event.

Also got some nice pictures of the solder station outside Wollerton Hall.

The Wollaton Hall "Science in the Park" was a really great event - We taught 69 people (oldest about 40 youngest about 4) to solder today!

We were using the amazing FLASHY BADGE kits that BetaLayouts very kindly donated to us about a year ago.

The kits were very popular indeed and we've taken a total of £207 which goes straight into the Hackspace funds.

We gave out well over 50 book marks to several interested folk.

I'd like to thank Hannah and Jake who got there from the start to help, Andy "rapstrap" Harsley for putting me onto the event organiser AND for attending to teach soldering as well as Martin Raynsford who popped in on his way back from Halifax and also taught loads of kids too!

It was also nice to see members Tony and Jennifer at the event too. Jake and I are thinking that we might like to get an event shelter and try and get Hackspace to do as many similar events as possible (though we're running out of badges to solder).

There's £207 to spend on an event shelter! I think it's a great idea. I think we still have loads of pcbs, so just need to get some more parts.

Very impressive result. I completely missed it happening but couldn't
have made it anyway.

Actually, probably just as well - I had a flood at home from my
upstairs neighbour's water tank so better I dealt with that.

Makes my own attempts at offering soldering tuition look very poor...
but hey, I can only improve. :)

Hi Dominic & everyone

> It was also nice to see members Tony and Jennifer at the event too.

Actually I'm not a member, not yet anyway - I'm an enthusiast for the
possibilities of Hackspace and I may become a member in due course if I
find myself using the space enough. Early days yet :-)

It was good to drop by though and see things happening! Would've stayed
longer but had something else to go to after.

Next event in Notts is 28th June:

http://www.thebigbangfair.co.uk/eastmidlands/nearme.cfm

Might be still time to arrange a Nottinghack stand, although it's on a
Thursday and you might not be able to sell the badges at this one.
(Mainly a schools & students day.) Will be a very good opportunity to
showcase Nottinghack though.
