Hi all,

I am going to be starting up a photography group at the Hackspace. I know of a few people already interested in photography at the space, plus its the kind of creative thing we can easily cater for at the space.

The Hackspace has a great ethos of skill sharing and welcoming people from all levels which would be an excellent base for a photography group.
I was thinking of running it once a month. However I thought it best to ask what people would prefer. An evening tends to be easier for people working in Nottingham.
However if we run it on a weekend day, that leaves more room for doing activities and workshops. Of course we could run it on an evening, then book extra weekend days for events.

I recently went to a black & white film developing and print making workshop in Derby, which would make for a great event.

It would also be good to have different members do talks, sessions and workshops. If there is something specific people want to learn we could even get someone external in.

So, let me know if you are interested, we will arrange an initial meet up, to discuss what people might want from the group.
Perhaps people could bring some of their recent photos to show.

Anyone would be welcome, people who have been doing it for years, or people interested in getting in to it.

I'm an eternal beginner, I'd love to get more out of my camera.

I would struggle to commit to the same weekend day each month. I'm also unable to make Tuesday evenings.

Great idea Jake.

I have seen quite a few of these ‘Out of auto’ workshops kicking around.

While I don’t entirely agree with them, there are quite a few things a beginner can learn really quickly.
I imagine a well structured and polite group of people will very quickly help beginners of any kind get on their feet.
With no real need for a specific workshop.

Just like with using the tools in the space. Natural skill sharing.

I was originally going to run a photo workshop, but decided starting a group would be a better idea. Even if that leads onto workshops.

Currently, I am thinking perhaps a monday evening once a month. As I know Thursday evenings are filling up with arduino/sewing/ukulele (though they are not in the calendar yet), then photography doesn’t really lend itself to happening at the same time as bad movie night. Obviously we can’t do it on Wednesday, so monday or tuesday evenings are all that is left.

There are plenty of them, and one company I know of in Nottingham runs them every few weeks, but I've never been keen enough.  I think I'd learn easier this way anyway.

Count me in for a Monday evening :-)

I'm interested in participating/helping/joining in. I really need to get
a proper DSLR but since I've no idea the true power of them I would just
be blind with it (got a fancy enough normal digital camera right now to
keep me going!)

One of the key things I would like the group to embody is this complete equal footing.
Sure a more expensive camera can produce technically better results.

However if a person is enjoying using their mobile phone for photography, who am I to say otherwise?

That way, when someone like yourself comes and gets involved, its completely welcoming and you can learn at your own pace.

How do people feel about Monday the 3rd of March for an initial meeting?
Then running it as an event every first monday.

To kick it off I will give a small talk about starting in photography, the group and also the ethos.

I will produce some posters to put up around the space.

I can likely make it :)

Also yeah, about cameras that's fine, but I do need a DSLR at some point
to do proper manual zooming and viewfinding, which you can't do on my
current point and click. Would be nice but need some advice and training
on them, heh.

Hi all,

I have made a flyer for this, which I will put up in the space shortly.

Can someone put this in the calendar for me? Then I will put it out on the website/facebook etc.

So, we will be having our first meeting on Monday 3rd March, from about 6.30pm onwards.
I will be giving an initial talk titled ‘Less worry, more photos’ which will be a bit of an introduction to the ethos of the group packaged
up along side some inspirational words, which will start at 7.30pm.

So people able to arrive a little earlier can socialise, but you won’t miss anything major if you arrive at 7.30pm.

You have to bring a recently taken photo with you as well. Ideally printed off.
If you can not print it off before hand, email it me over and I will print it for you.

Otherwise I will see you then.

Jake

It's added to the calendar now.

FYI, if you ever want to add something to the Hackspace Calendar, you just create an event in your own Google Calendar, and then invite in...@nottinghack.org.uk to your event.  And boom - it's added.

You can do manual zooming and viewfinding on a point and click.

Zoom in:- Walk towards the subject
Zoom Out:- Walk away from the subject
Viewfinding, is more about seeing the subject and pointing the camera
than real accurate framing at the time of taking the shot, you can fix a LOT in editing
even with a relatively 'low res'  phone type camera.

About the only thing you can't do much about on point and click cameras is depth of field
but them 99% of people with DSLR's don't know how to do that either !!

Anti-gear snobbery will be not be tolerated just as much as gear snobbery.
Infact, any kind of snobbery even in jest will not be welcome.

As for zooming in and out, I will more than happily show you how that is not the case if you come along, politely of course :)

If you are mainly just being readily defensive about people thinking ill of you using a point & shoot, don’t worry.
The whole ethos behind the group is that such things really don’t matter.

Its all about learning from each other, the more you learn, the more able you are to make your own decisions.

Hi all,

Thanks for everyone that came along last night. I was pretty impressed that pretty much everyone managed to rustle up a photo.
The blue room worked out perfectly, with the nice big plasma screen on the wall for presentations/showing off photos.

Next months meeting will be the first Monday of April, which is the 7th.

We settled on a general theme for taking photos during the next month which was ‘Night time’ basically any photo taken outside at night.

I am going to have it set up so that people can easily email/share photos on the night.
I will make sure I have a card reader etc with me. Then we can get everyones photos on the big screen.

Every month you need to bring along your favourite photo taken recently. This could be the same as the themed photo, or a different photo.
We had a great informal discussion about the photos last night. Which was great.

Seb will be doing a talk on composition, which will be a great talk for all skill levels.

So, I will see you all next month. I will put out a few reminders closer to the time as well.
Be sure to tell everyone about the group too.

Dear all,

Good to see meet everyone on Monday. We have a great group of people and the right attitude to learn and enjoy ourselves. Thanks Jake for pulling it all together!

As jake mentioned, next month (7th April) I will run a 30-40 minute talk / seminar on composition.

It would be invaluable if in advance of this session everyone could complete a 10-minute homework task:

Find a painting that you like, and come up with a very brief idea if what about it you like. It can be anything at all that is made with paint on a flat surface.
The description of what you like about the painting can be only a few single words like 'energy' 'sadness' or 'intimacy', or it could be a few sentences.
Please email me a copy of the picture. The intention is to go around the table at the start of the session and each share what we like in our chosen paintings.

See you all there!

Seb.

I have the app Camera+ on my iPhone, it does some pretty nice things like exposure lock, focus lock and picking different points for the focus and exposure.

Nice that it gives you read outs of the current ISO etc, which is useful for finding shots which will look great on the phone.

Hello everyone.

Just a reminder that the next meeting of our photography group will be next Monday 7th April.
Some people might be a little unsure as April starts tomorrow. Just happens to be the month in the year where monday is the last day.

The theme set last week was to take a night photo, how have people been getting on with that? I will have it set up so people can easily email me photos on the evening.
Or if you want to email me them before hand, you can email m...@gmjhowe.com and I will have them ready to show as well.

Seb will be doing a talk on ‘Composition’ which I am looking forward to.
He requested that we all try and email him one of our favourite paintings to aid the discussion, along with a few thoughts on why we like those paintings.
If you can email those to Seb, that would be great. If you want to email them to me along with your night photo, thats fine too, I will forward them onto Seb.

Otherwise, I am looking forward to next monday. It feels too long since our initial meeting!

So, reminder, next meeting is on Monday 7th April. The talk will begin at 7.30, but I will be around from 6.30 for informal chat and skill sharing.

Hi all,

Just another reminder for this evenings photo group.

We will be having a talk from Seb about composition. Good composition is a great fundamental skill to work on, I very much recommend coming along for it.

The talk will start at 7.30 in the blue room, but there will be general chatter and skill sharing from 6.30 onwards.

After the talk we will go through peoples photos from last months theme 'night photography'. If you want to email me the photos before hand so we can get them on the screen please do.

Then there will be further skill sharing and hands on learning depending on what things people have been struggling with.

I will see you all later.

Hello Everyone.

Just a reminder that we have our photo group meeting this evening.

I will be doing a talk on the fundamentals of the technical side of photography called;

'The Boring Stuff that Enables the Artistic'

Its going to be a pretty essential talk for anyone who feels they are yet to master their camera.
We will be going over Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO and Exposure and how they interact with each other.

I will also touch on some of the other basic areas of confusion.

While it may not teach you everything in the ~40 minutes, it will set you on the right track.
Everyone will go away knowing how to take better technical photos.

After the talk, a few of us will sit down and actually go through how much your individual cameras can handle.
Whether its a phone, point and shoot, mirrorless or DSLR.

Also, be sure to bring a photo with you! (or email me one)

See you later.

I usually prefer to not have filters on my camera as I'm actually shooting as I do everything in post but the vaseline one does actually come out quite good and Photoshop's smudge (past 500px) tool can bring many a computer to it's knees (I just tried at 1500px and gave up waiting for Photoshop to respond after 15 minutes!).

Love the gopro egg timer hack too. :)

I made a quite effective ring flash out of cardboard, duct tape, tin foil and plastic bags a few years back. I'll take a photo of it at some point.

Nice, I love DIY hacks.

Totally with Marcus on this one though, a lot of the filter effects you can add on later in photoshop etc really easily.
You can not however taken them off in photoshop if you decide the effect ruined a good photo.

One of our members David made a cool bokeh kit, which had some useful shapes. They were done on our laser cutter.

As for flash hacks, I use these a lot, one of the few areas where DIY can not only mimic but improve on purchasable items.

If anyone ever does make/invent some hack or trick, be sure to bring it along when we meet.
I love seeing what ideas and solutions people come up with.

Bokeh kits are also something that isn't as easy to do well in Photoshop either. It's such a strong and often distracting effect that I've not really given it a go in ages though. I have an old Lens Baby (looks like: http://www DOT mikendo DOT com/blogger/uploaded_images/lensbaby3g-788942.jpg) that's fun to use. It creates a selective area that's in focus and the does a kind of radial blur out from there. You can adjust it so the selective focus is where you want. It came with some discs you could insert that have shaped holes for different bokeh. Frankly I don't remember the last time I used it so if anyone wants to borrow it then they can. :P

I've attached photos of that DIY ring flash. Made to fit quite snug with my camera and 430EX II... Again, it's a bit dusty through not being used in a few years, heh. It works a hell of a lot better than it looks, I promise! The inside is all lined with foil to help reflect the light down and around the ring. I had to use more layers of plastic bag at the top and less at the bottom to make the level of light coming out even in all the areas. It doesn't look nearly as cool as this that I just found though: http://www DOT dyxum DOT com/dforum/diy-fiber-optic-ttl-ring-flash_topic46637.html

Unfortunately I don't think I'm going to be able to come to a photoraphy meet till July due to clashes with being away for work. :(

How is everyone doing?

This monday the 7th will be our next photo group.
We had a great meeting last month where we went out on a photo walk.

This week I am doing a talk on 'Shapes, Shadows and Forms'.

If you ever wondered how you maintain interest and lead the eye around a photo, this is the talk you need.
It ties in with some of the elements we went over in the composition talk.

It really is a great way of thinking and can push everyday photography to the next level.

Hopefully I will see you all there, if not I hope it is because you are off on holiday taking lots of photos.
The talk will kick off promptly at 7.30, and shouldn't last much longer than 30 minutes.

Great for any camera with a flash, be it DSLR or Point & Shoot, even a dedicated flashgun.

Well, another month comes around!

I know this month is likely to be our quietest due to people being away. I also know September is likely to be quiet too, especially with a lot of use still being at EMF camp.

Tomorrows session is going to be an informal one, with no specific talk. We set the task last month of coming up with a few black and white shots, ideally using the pointers from the talk.
I want to use this session to give us a chance to go over some of the previous talks.

If we have fewer numbers essentially anyone who does turn up will get a more one on one evening with myself, where we can look over anything you are struggling with and get people back on top.

If anyone who is not attending EMF camp could volunteer to run Septembers session, that would be excellent, I am helping with some of the organisation of the Camp so even if I am around for the evening I will not be any fit state to give a coherent talk.

Either way I will see you all tomorrow.

When I was looking for one I couldn't beat £150 - but then again, I was looking for a Canon. Not completely sure how Olympus compare, but these are a couple of years newer than mine, I think.

Hey All,

Yes, these are pretty nice little cameras. I recommend would recommend them for anyone currently using a point and shoot camera looking to try something a bit better than that while on a decent budget.

The Micro 4/3rds sensor is a lot bigger than in a point and shoot, so you get a nice jump up in quality from them even if your point and shoot is like a 15mp+ sensor.
Remember, its not just about MP but also the sensor size.

If you are currently using a DSLR, the sensor will be a little smaller, but only noticeably so if you are used to taking arty shallow DOF shots.

Good friday everyone!

So, next Monday is our first proper meeting since the slower paced summer. Obviously I am not going to tell people off for not attending over the summer because I assume you were all on holiday, doing exciting things and have lots of photos to show for it?

This monday we are going by getting together and showing off our favourite photos from across the entire summer. I know most people will have at least one or two bits they can show off.
I will make sure to have my laptop/cable set up for showing off photos, so if you can make sure to either email me your photos before hand, or bring them in on a USB drive/SD card then we will get them on the big screen to look at.

We will kick off looking through photos from 7.30 onwards.

Then, since summer is coming to an end, I am going to do a short talk on gearing up for the autumn and winter as a photographer.
It will be a motivational mix of technical work arounds and creative ways of finding new and interesting photos, I may even go into what sort of clothing suits well for photography in the cold!

We will also be talking about and deciding on potential photo walk ideas for during the autumn, most likely a weekend day, so if you have some suggestions to bring along for places, that would be great.

So, we will kick off at 7pm, starting our photo showcase at 7.30pm.

See you all then.

Jake

I hope you are all having a good weekend! Hopefully getting some photos while the weather is still fairly mild.

Tomorrow is our monthly photo group meeting.

Leigh, I mentioned last month about you doing your talk on experimenting with objects infront of the lens for effects, are you still happy to do a little talk/workshop on that?

I also stumbled on a nice little article about 'beating the blues’ when it comes to photography, which will make for a great little mini talk. Should tie in nicely with the talk I gave last month and really set us up for taking lots of nice photos over the winter.

On top of that, I also have a couple of very interesting activity days to talk to you guys about. (don’t worry if you can’t make it, I will still be talking about them on here after as well).
So if any of you have some ideas for things to do as well, then be sure to be ready to tell us about them.

I think having a regular kind of ‘day out’ is something we should start doing, even if only 3 or 4 people come along each time.

Either way I will see you all tomorrow evening.

I'm getting my Raw photos off my new camera tonight, I'm going to use the Canon supplied software for now but is there a good free Raw editor around I can play with? Or a really good non-subscription reasonably priced piece of software?

RAW Therapee is a free one for Windows/Linux
http://rawtherapee.com

A cheapish one off payment one is Photo Ninja - http://www.picturecode.com/index.php

Mac and Linux only is Dark Table - http://www.darktable.org (essentially a Lightroom inspired editor)

Beyond that you are looking at Lightroom, or Capture One I also think DXO does one too.

Failing all that, the standard RAW editing software you get from canon is pretty decent too.

Good Monday everyone.

So, this evening is Photography Group. Last month Leigh gave us a demonstration on using objects to create effects in front of the camera.
Which we then said we would have as the theme throughout the month for people to play around with.

If you managed to get around to playing with that bring those photos in, but also be sure to bring any other favourite photos from the past month.

I wanted to plan a photo walk for one weekend day over the next month, likely involving mince pies in the evening.
So if you have any ideas for places to go for a walk, either around Nottingham or further afield we will be discussing those.

Finally we will also be having a bit of a hands on technical session. As this will be our last meeting of the year I thought it would be good to go through peoples questions and just get everyone up to speed on the entire spectrum of technical photography stuff, I have a talk on this earlier in the year, so just making sure everyone is happy, know what they are doing and can focus on just taking photos in the new year. Also we will have a quick talk through a few pointers for taking photos over the festive period.

See you all later.

Happy New Year photographers.

For the new year I thought we could have a nice informal session looking at what photos people have bagged over the christmas period.
We had some nice snow on boxing day, I am not sure if Nottingham got as much, but hopefully some of you managed to get out and snag a few photos!

We also had a few days where there was really nice fog. Which I actually missed.

Then I thought it would be good to have a look at some of the ‘New Years Resolutions’ photographers will typically start at this time of year, then look at ways that to do something similar that won’t result in you hating photography. :)

We will start at 7.30pm, I will likely be around a bit earlier.

Just a heads up that I won’t be at the photography group this evening.
However if some of you were planning to go along do let others know on here, as that tends to encourage enough people for a good session.

Be sure to bring some photos to talk through and show off.

Would anyone object if I borrowed one of the tripods in the blue room for a week or so? I'd like to have a go at some long exposure night shots and a tripod would make it a lot easier. I've been preoccupied with Uni stuff recently, would be nice to get back into the swing of things by trying something new.

Hello everyone,

So I am trying to ramp up attendance for the photography group now we head into summer and people are likely going to be out more.

To kick this off I thought I would do a few weeks on Portraits.
To start off I thought everyone could bring their favourite portrait that they have taken. No specific time period, but the more recent the better.
Don’t have one? Set yourself the ultimate challenge and get one while enjoying the bank holiday before joining us in the evening.

Then we can have a look through those, generally talk about what people do and don’t like in portraits.
Perhaps bring a portrait someone else has done that you like, but are not sure how they did it?

Then over the next few months I thought we could work through various type of portraits, natural light, flash, shooting when out with your family or something more formal like shooting at a wedding.

We will start at 7.30pm tomorrow, I will try to make sure we have some snacks (suggestions for snacks people would like also welcome).
If you can let me know if you are thinking of coming that would be great.

Ok guys thanks for letting me know.

Seen as I haven't had any replies from anyone saying they were planning to come along tonight I think I will cancel tonight's session.

Perhaps worth having a discussion on here for moving forwards with the group? I think we might all do better just organising a couple of social events/days outside the hackspace over the summer? Then it's less of a commitment for people, plus we find some places suited to actually getting out and taking photos.

Plus if only a few of us go for a walk somewhere it's still a success, where as a regular evening meeting does better with more people.

Could you make use of some old Photax tungsten studio lamps, reflectors and stands?
I haven't used them for about 15 years. They're in my loft. Free if you can use them.

I also have four Metz flashguns, cables, etc. in an aluminium case. The batteries will
need to be replaced (C size NiCds, from memory, but NiMH should be OK as replacements).

I'd be glad to see them go to a good home/Hackspace.
