Dear Sir,

I’ve an inquiry about the open font license of Google Noto Fonts and the permitted usage for end users.

(1) Under the open font license, can I use these fonts for the below types of commercial use on a worldwide basis and free of charge?

a. use in printed materials for promotion of my company’s products

b. use on my company’s website and our business partner’s website

c. use on social media like Twitter, Facebook, Weibo and WeChat

(2) If the use in (1) is not free of charge, what are the license fees and can you please provide a price list?

Thank you,

Leo

Leo,

Disclaimer:

  1. I am not a lawyer.
  2. The following information is not legal advice, and should not be treated as such.
  3. The following information is provided “as is” without any representations or warranties, express or implied.
  4. I make no representations or warranties in relation to the following information.
  5. Specifically, I do not warrant that the following information is complete, true, accurate, up-to-date, or non-misleading.
  6. You must not rely on the following information as an alternative to legal advice from your attorney or other professional legal services provider.
  7. I am also not a representative of Google Inc., the copyright owner of the Noto fonts.

Having said this:

The Noto fonts are released under the SIL Open Font License v1.1 (OFL), which is available at:
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/googlei18n/noto-fonts/master/LICENSE

To find out answers to Frequently Asked Questions about the OFL, please consult the OFL-FAQ web version:
http://scripts.sil.org/ofl-faq_web

Given that I am not a lawyer and the following information is not legal advice, I can answer that, by interpreting the OFL license, I believe the following is true:

  1. You can use the Noto fonts in physical or electronic products, printed and online documents, and apps that you create.
  2. You can distribute your creations for free or sell them commercially.
  3. You can also create and distribute modified versions of the Noto fonts.
  4. You can do all of the above free of charge, worldwide and perpetually (forver).
  5. You cannot sell the original or modified Noto fonts by themselves.
  6. You must include the original copyright info and distribute the OFL if you distribute the original Noto fonts, or create and distribute modified versions of the Noto fonts.

Best,
