So as mentioned last week, I'd like to try holding "office hours" on
iOS development at the Notman house, as a way of giving something back
to the space. Last week, I had a few conversations with two residents
with some design questions and the experience was pretty positive. So,
as of this week, I'll be doing this in the Notman cafe on Wednesdays
from 2-3pm. Come and ask me anything. :) I can even do some basic
coding for you, time permitting of course.
A bit of background on me: I've been designing programming iOS
applications for the last 2 years, first at Navarra Group
(http://navarra.ca), now at Mindsea (http://mindsea.com). Much of my
work has been (sadly) under NDA, but here's a small sample of projects
I've worked on in some form:
* PocketBooth (photo booth application): http://www.projectbox.com/pocketbooth/
* CanaDream Club (travel guide): http://www.canadream.com/clubapp/
* Transit to Go (bus schedule viewer): http://transittogo.mindsea.ca/
iOS topics I know a thing or two about:
* Objective C Programming
* UIKit
* Interface builder
* General application design (and conformance to Apple's Human
Interface Guidelines)
* Threading
* Networking
* Various 3rd party libraries (three20, facebook connect, SBJSON,
ASIHttpRequest)
* How not to get your application rejected by Apple ;)
P.S. You might be wondering how this relates to the Notman Hackademy.
Short version is, based on my understanding from the meeting we had
earlier this week, it doesn't at the moment. The Notman Hackademy
looks to be more of a forum for focused peer-directed learning,
whereas I'm just volunteering to answer people's questions. If someone
wants to start a class on iOS development, I'd be happy to participate
in that in some form as well. But it's probably better for the people
interested in the learning to organize that.

I'm curious, how did it go today?
