Spanish aircraft carrier to be auctioned as scrap

The Principe de Asturias will be sold off at a starting price of 4.8 million euros

Spanish aircraft carrier to be auctioned as scrap

The “Príncipe de Asturias”, which for many years was the Spanish navy’s only aircraft carrier before the multi-purpose amphibious assault ship “Juan Carlos I” was commissioned in 2010, is one step closer to the scrapyard this week, with the Ministry of Defence having announced that it will be auctioned off at a starting price of 4.8 million euros.

This decision has been taken following the failure to sell the ship off to other navies, despite interest having initially been shown by Brazil and Indonesia. The sale foundered due to the high cost of renovating the vessel, estimated at between 100 and 150 million euros, and the fact that after 25 years in service it has an estimated remaining useful life of no more than 5 years.

After coming into service in 1988 the 198-metre-long “Príncipe de Asturias”, which was manned by a crew of 600, sailed approximately 448,000 miles, and although she took part in numerous missions was never involved in combat. The ship is currently in the port of Ferrol (Galicia), and any company interested in acquiring it now has two months in which to register a bid.
