This is great, thanks for forwarding.  To play devil's advocate, most of those "locks" were absurdly weak sauce.  NYC does in many cases foster a "not my problem" mentality though; I would have to be under extreme duress to leave my bike anywhere out of my direct line of sight, especially outside of 42nd-90th.

I would also point out that, at least for me, in places like New York and LA you tend to see a lot of weird shit, so things that are “out of the ordinary” don’t really phase you.

When I first moved to LA from SF, my friends would point out “weirdos” that I didn’t even notice because they looked like people I’d regularly see in SF.
