(first, many thanks to Lindsey for introducing me to this group, I am Quing - Yale 2011 - healthcare industry)

This Opinion piece on the NYT basically says that maybe the best method of an effective workout is to follow the "progressive overload principle" - by asking your body to do a little bit more on a regular basis, your body will eventually be able to run that marathon or do that 300 pound bench press. This is in direct contrast to the "muscle confusion principle" - by changing your workout routine constantly, your body continues to adapt and get stronger. Many workout hypes promote this principle - P90X, Crossfit, etc. - offering clients complicated workout routines and charging them hundreds per month.

The description of the "progressive overload principle” sounds like what my personal trainer in SF followed, and it worked really well for me. I decreased the duration of my workouts and got a lot stronger.

If anyone in SF is looking for a personal trainer, I HIGHLY recommend him.
