Hey Kevin & Brooke,

I just read about this on Dr Dobbs.
http://dobbscodetalk.com/index.php?option=com_myblog&show=Camps-Vs-Conferences.html&Itemid=29

Both of you talk about increasing the size of the Ruby community maybe this is one way to get it done.  Originally, I was thinking of the gathering being more towards Denver to increase the turn-out but maybe closer to the Springs would be better to get the Ruby folks from around here out of the woodwork.  If plans started now, there could be a CRC 2010 next summer!

Just an idea,
Robin

Hey Robin,

Excellent idea. It would be a lot of fun and a great way get to know
people better and learn new tricks at the same time. I'm up for
building momentum for a 2010 Ruby Camp. Lets spread the word and try
to get more people involved.

Additionally, this is an excellent opportunity for someone in the
group to take up the helm of building a site dedicated to the 2010
Ruby Camp. We have plenty of smart people in the group who can lend a
hand and sort out issues with building and hosting the site. We can
cut out a portion of our monthly meetings to help with the site as
well. That or we can use sharing sessions via free tools like Skype
for more frequent conversations.

So I was thinking about this more and I have an idea for a location. I
have a friend that has a condo in Park City, Utah that is conveniently
located between the Deer Valley and Park City ski resorts. The condo
is three levels, two-bedrooms, with underground parking and could
easily support six people. If we needed more space, we could network
in the adjacent condos with additional people. The point is that it
would be an excellent destination and workshop area for Ruby coding in
addition to doing some skiing (winter) or enjoying mountain hiking
(summer).

Just an idea for doing some coding and have fun at the same time.
Maybe like a long 4-day weekend would work.

Another option would be to head out to Crested Butte. There is an
awesome lodge there that we could easily take over with a great common
area that would allow us to network, work on code, etc. Its called
the Cristiana Guesthau (I have written about it before here:
http://www.aeonscope.net/2007/12/10/crested-butte/).

Finally, anyone who has connections to a log cabin, time share, etc.
would be good. There are probably cheep solutions if we find people
with the right connections.

Brooke,

I was thinking that whatever facility it is that there should be enough room for 20-40 or more people and then a banquet room or hall that could support every in there at one time.  The Crested Butte area and facility sound great but I am not so sure the Park City location would accommodate the gathering.

I sent Pat Allan an email and wanting to have a Ruby Camp here in Colorado.  He appears to be the main point of contact for the other camps that have been setup around the world (Australia, UK, Maine).  I am curious to see if he would like us to put together the camp with his help and under his umbrella or if he will suggest what to do to put an event together on our own.

My other thought was a Dude Ranch up in the mountains.  We did a dude ranch for spring break a couple of years back and it was pretty nice.  We had horse back riding, frisbee golf, a hot tub and a pool table available to us and they had a couple of big open rooms that could hold 20+ people at time with limited Internet connectivity to limit distractions there.  Not sure what kind of a deal we could get on overnight accommodations.  We might get a better deal if we did have the camp in the spring.

Some thoughts,
Robin
