I guess I won't be staying here.... Not easy booking a place in
Ashgabat, I must say that.

We stayed at the Independent Hotel as it was the only one to have
rooms free on the road, and could not have regretted the decision
more. The price of the hotel would suggest four or five star quality
in this part of the world, but it was a one star at best.
The room stank of smoke. The beds were basic camping mattresses with
cheap wood screwed on the side to disguise them as proper beds. The
pillows were torn. The bath was (literally) falling apart, and the
shower unit looked like it had been put together by the plumber's
intern. All topped off by a constant background buzz of flies. We then
discovered that the pool behind the hotel, which they proudly
advertised when we first enquired about the room, costs extra to use
on a daily basis. On our second evening (of mercifully only two) as we
were getting ready to go into town the electricity and water all went
off for several hours, meaning we had to visit a friends hotel nearby
to shower. When we pushed for a modest discount upon checkout for the
inconvenience this caused us, they sent an attendant outside to lock
our cars in so we couldn't leave and threatened to call the
immigration police if we didn't pay the full price.
I could not more strongly recommend you avoid this place. Terrible
rooms. Horrendous concept of 'service' or even basic manners. And to
top it all off, really very expensive.
