Hi Dear Scandinavians!

How is everything with you?
I should take the oppertunity to use this network for some help with our work with membership.

In SVEA we are doing a huge work with the way we "connect" members to our organisation.
Today we only connect student councils, it means that we don´t connect any individual students to the organisation.
Wer are know investigate to change system,
it would mean that we should connect individual members to the organisation, but they have to be a member in ther student
council to be a member in SVEA. So in the reality it would mean that the system would be nearly the same as before,
beacuse the individual members can´t be members in the organisation without be a member in the organisation.
Why we are doing this is because that the ministry of youth have changed the rules.

Therefore we now have a lot of discussions in SVEA about membership and what student councils are.
So I thought that I should ask you to se how it is in the other scandinavian coutries.

- Is it set by law that you should have student councils?
- Where do you get the biggest part of your money from?
- Do you have a definition of student council?
- Do you have individual membership?
- Do your organisation working with both individual members and student councils?

hugs / Sofia

Hej Sofia!

Everything is good here!

To answer some of your questions:
* Yes, it is set by law that we schools are supposed to have student councils.
*Our organisation get approximately between 2 and 3 millions Norwegian kroners every year. Those money comes from the government, but we also get member fees from our member students. It is usually the schools who pay, and it's 8 Norwegian kroners per student.
*"A student council is a body with a democratic elected representative of the school students. The councils opinions are concidered when the school administration makes decisions regarding learning, environmental strategies, and the students wealth." That is the definition we have of student councils in the law.
*We have member schools, and all the students in theese schools are automatically members. You can also sign up for individual membership if your school isn't a member school, but this rarely happens.
*We visit our member schools, and try to meet with all the students in the school(like in a cafeteria, gymnastic hall, auditory), so that we reach out to everyone. Never the less, there are many schools where this is very difficult to do. Our option B is to speak with the student councils, and then they forward the "message" to their classes.
We also offer training of the student councils so that they can be better, and many other types of training.

Hope you're satisfied with my answer!
Looking forward to seeing you guys in Norway! :-)

Krämmer,
