Hello. Here is my brief note about our first meeting.
Date: 16th June 2010
Where: Skillsmatter office
Attendees: 15
Topics:
# Self introduction (20 min)
We had attendees from variety of background. Some from academic, some
from product companies, and others from service companies which are
interested in using NoSQL related products. The NoSQL databases which
people have prior experiences are CouchDB, MongoDB, Redis, Tokyo
Cabinet, and HBase.
# Discussion about all thesis. (30 min)
Neil went through brief overview of each thesis and we had voting
about which thesis we cover next. The below were the top 3 most
popular theses and we decided to cover Google's BigTable as next
topic.
* Amazon’s Dynamo
* Cassandra — A Decentralized Structured Storage System
* Google’s BigTable
# Main discussion: PNUTS. (40 min)
Mathias from 10gen led the PNUTS thesis. (he was interested in the
thesis because it has similarity with how MongoDB implemented
shading). It started off as Q&A with Mathias about the differences
and similarities among MongoDB and PNUTS.
(NOTE: The above is VERY brief summary. For people who attended the
meetup, please post your notes, thoughts, findings, etc. Neil and I
will compile our notes so that other regions can share.)
