Hey,

After the last meeting we talked about grouping the papers together
with related concepts and ideas, so I though I'd write those up here
and added a few more to discus before the meetings.

So they are :-

* Cassandra, Dynamo (Next weeks)
Two systems which use consistent hashing to provide highly available
reads and writes.

* Big Table, Google File System (GFS), MapReduce,
These are basically an overview of the stack of software that google
uses to store and process data.

* CAP Theorm, Harvest Yield, Eventual Consistency, Base
Ideas behind how tradeoff between different properties a system can
have.

* Chubby, Paxos, (Time, Clocks, and the Ordering of Events in a
Distributed System)
Different ways to maintain consistency and resolve conflicts in
distributed systems.

* Zip Joins
Maybe another smaller session or in the pub after?

* Benchmarking Cloud Serving Systems with YCSB
Summary evening so what we covered over the summer?

What do people think? Any suggestions for more?

Also I've created a shared group on Mendeley with all the papers in to
read easily, so if you use this to read papers let me know and I'll
add you to the group.

Thanks,
Dan

Thanks for putting this up Dan.

I'd like to suggest another 'source' to be read as a part of the CAP
Theorum grouping - this blog post by Daniel Abadi
http://dbmsmusings.blogspot.com/2010/04/problems-with-cap-and-yahoos-little.html

I think it lends an interesting perspective to understanding the CAP
Theorum, and given we have already covered the PNUTS paper might help
the conversation.

What do people think?

Just seen about the shared group on Medeley. I'd like to be added to
the group please.

Is this something which the other groups globally might benefit from &
which you might be happy to let them use? If so let me know & I'll put
it out on the global group & let Tim know.

Also,

how would people feel about a series of hack days after we've finished
going through the papers?

Great stuff, thanks for taking the time to consolidate the papers a bit and the extra reference.

I'm definitely up for some hack days in the future, maybe interested people can discuss this after the next meet-up?

Have fun
Finn
