Onething I noticed is that 'show interfaces description' does not work on any device. I would like to be able to use commands properly the way they would work on a real router. I have tried installing and setting up gns3 but I can't seem to find the same routers and switches from packet tracer. Can you offer me any advice?

I've faced the same scenario and the way I found out to workaround it was using like this: show interface FastEthernet 4/0, but yes, some commands simply does not work or only half of it works, like "banner motd and banner login", nothing else.

Same issue here. "Show interfaces description" will not work on routers in packet tracer. I've not used all the available routers, so I suppose it is possible I'm using an old router.

My work-around is to use "show running-config" to see all the interface's descriptions. Hope that helps.

So I use Cisco packet tracer to design and test my network layout (to make sure I didn't mess up or forget anything) before deploying to the actual devices. However there isn't a SG300-52P (or any series 300 switches) switch in packet tracer. Does anyone know how to add that device to packet tracer? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

PT from Cisco Net Academy is just a software Simulator; it does not run on real IOS or virtual IOS; It is close to IOS but It does not really behave like real IOS would (some simply features do).

PT is excellent tool to learn and practice networking fundamentals and commands for CCNA exam.

Packet-tracer is an inbuilt utility on the Nexus 9000 that can be used to trace the path of the packet through the switch. It can be invoked using the command line and can be configured to match IP address and or layer 4 attributes. It cannot be used to match ARP traffic.

This tool provides confirmation on whether a flow is traversing through the switch. It also provides a counter to track flow statistics which can be useful for scenerios of intermittent/complete packet loss.

The previous commands programs the trigger on every Broadcom Trident II Asic that exist on the line card or the fabric modules. When a flow with the matching attributes passes through these modules, it shows the counters being hit thereby helping identify the path within the switch (Ingress module--->One of the fabric module---->egress module).

PACL (Port Access-list) is used to see if a particular physical interface received our interested traffic. However on Nexus platform, some of the linecards do not have TCAM carved for PACL. TCAM carving requires module reload. In those cases, use packet tracer to match the interested traffic. You can also trace the packet going up to fabric ports and going towards egress module. So packet tracer gives you more insight into how traffic is being forwarded within the switch.

There is a known issue between packet tracer 7.1 and Ubuntu 16.04 which blocks packet tracer from starting. Packet tracer needs a library libicui18n.so.52 which has been updated with libicui18n.so.55 in Ubuntu 16.04. To solve this issue, we have to download and install the older version of this library. Older version of this library is available in a Debian package at :-

Open terminal type packettracer, make sure you use two t's, packettracer not packetracer, not case sensitive, do not need to change directory, I am running version 7.1.1 on ubuntu 14.04, no need to type packettracer7 or packettracer7.1.1 just packettracer.

Hey, I'm the newbie of Cisco Packet Tracer. In the image as you can see there are lots of computers(0-99,1-200). I couldn't do that. Is it possible or it just some way of describing how much computers are there?

As you correctly guessed it's only a way of displaying how many computers are connected in this VLAN but you can't connect 100 computers on a single switch in packet tracer. (So you may assume switch0 actually represents VLAN1 and is distributed on several physical switches)

The ellipse is a standard feature on the latest versions and the "..." is added using the "place note" feature (see screenshot below, keyboard shortcut "N"). It is recognizable due the very light grey background around the dots.

You can drag and drop as many computers you need/want from the "end devices" or something like that. Once you drag them in, you can connect them as you would like. You can get to CLI and that all of the other features. There are some things you can do, but I would encourage you to try it out and see what you can do! There are plenty of YouTube videos that can help.

Update 06/04/2024 : A new Cisco Packet Tracer 8.2.2 version has been released for download on Netacad website. This is a bugfix release fixing several bugs on accessibility, usability, and security of Packet Tracer 8.2. Cisco Packet Tracer 8.2 introduced a new command as well as bug fixing regarding incompatible DLLs that caused Packet Tracer crashes.

Cisco Packet Tracer 8.2 is created by Cisco SystemsTM and is provided for free to everyone. Self learners are able to download Cisco Packet Tracer after registering on Cisco Netacad website. This is a major change in Cisco delivery policy for Packet Tracer as previous versions were only available for Netacad students and instructors.

Cisco Packet Tracer 8.2.2 can be downloaded for FREE from official Cisco Netacad website. Log in to Cisco Netacad.com learning website and select Resources > Packet Tracer in the menu to access the download page. The software is provided with several tutorial files allowing academy students to discover the software features.

The NX-OSv 9000 is a virtual appliance designed to simulate the control plane of a Cisco Nexus 9000 switch. The NX-OSv 9000 shares the same software image running on Cisco Nexus 9000 hardware platform. Line card (LC) ASIC provisioning or any interaction from the control plane to rela switch ASICs are emulated by the NX-OSv 9000 software data plane.

Following the the Nexus 7000 Titanium emulator, the NX-OSv 9000 is a moder emulator for datacenter certifications training. It's also great plaform to test network automation prior to production deployment.

NX-OSv 9000 runs on GNS3, KVM, or VMware NSX. Current version of NXOSv is 10.4(1)F. This version adds or enhances VXLAN EVPN First Hop Security (IPv4), radius over DTLS, port-channel load-balance command for MPLS tagged traffic, support to redirect/deny all packets using ePBR policy, VXLAN QoS Outer Header Policy for Layer 2

UCS PE (Platform Emulator) is a powerful Cisco UCS Manager emulator allowing CCNP datacenter students to learn how to configure the UCS environment. The current version emulates the UCS manager 4.2(2aPE1), which includes 62xx/63xx/64xx Fabric Interconnect, C4200 series rack server chassis with C125 rack servers, as well as Cisco UCS M6 and HX220C and HX240C servers support. The S3260 storage server is also emulated in UCS PE. These release can be connected to GNS using VMware.

UCS PE is also featured in a Cisco dCloud programmability demo (cisco login required). The demo includes a comprehensive lab guide including the following content for Cisco UCS PowerTool and the Python SDK:

PT Anywhere is a web application designed to offer a network simulation environment based on Cisco Packet Tracer engine throug a web interface which can be accessed from a web browser. PT Anywhere can as such be integrated inside a website, an online course, a learning systm like moodle... It has been developed by the Open University and Cisco and has been funded by the FORGE project.

The PTBridge java utilitary has been validated working with Cisco Packet Tracer 7.0 . This tool provides real network connectivity to Cisco Packet Tracer, and thus the ability to connect to other lab environments. Download it from Github and connect your Packet Tracer labs to your real Cisco devices !.

to emnoc: people are not locked to cisco approach, just want to use good inventions if its possible. Imagine i have remote site, like datacenter , and no users can help me to generate traffic but i want to test web filters and app filters under policy , i have report that access to box.com and dropbox are passing trough although i see web filter block is applied for file sharing and storage category. How can i test at this situation? Where i'd get "active" traffic in datacenter with no users there?

Actually fortios has added a packet tracer like function to fortios "diag firewall iprope lookup" it can do protocol and port traffic flows and show you want policy is matched. you do not need active traffic per-se

The Fortinet Security Fabric brings together the concepts of convergence and consolidation to provide comprehensive cybersecurity protection for all users, devices, and applications and across all network edges.
