SCJEA INFORMATION

Everything on this post is important, but make sure to read/remember this part especially:
My cellphone number, if you have any questions/problems, is 949-231-7988. Sonali and Yash are driving everyone there from Northwood, so please meet at school in front of the Northwood sign at 7:30am. YOU MUST CARPOOL TO THE COMPETITION, so your parents can't drive you there (we have to adhere to district rules at least a little). AND DON'T BE LATE. It takes 30 minutes to get to Long Beach. Bring lunch or money for lunch (more information below). And because we can't find a ride for everyone BACK to Irvine, please arrange for rides yourself and *MESSAGE/TEXT ME* whether your parents are driving you or if you're getting a ride with someone else. I need to know that everyone has a ride home! If you're leaving early, let me know. Lastly, get a good night's rest. Eat breakfast. Have fun, and good luck! I believe in you all.

Where: Cal State University, Long Beach
1250 Bellflower Blvd.
Long Beach, CA 90840

When: Be there no later by 8:15am

What you're doing: Newspaper students compete in an on-the-spot contest. They attend a press conference and then have one hour to write a story or draw a cartoon. Photographers have two hours to take photos of the event.
Yearbook students have two hours to design a layout. (If you didn't know, there isn't a Best of Show category like there was at OCJEA.)

What to bring: Writers must bring notebook paper and a pen. They also may bring a dictionary, thesaurus, and stylebook. Neither laptop computers nor tape recorders will be permitted. Cartoonists should bring sketchpad and favorite drawing implement. No stencils or electronic drawing devices will be permitted. Photographers MUST bring a 35-mm digital camera with FLASH CARD MEMORY. Layout participants can bring a pica ruler, although they will probably be using computers to design. Yearbook team participants can bring writing utensils, scratch paper, and notebook paper; however, all photos and copy will be placed on the computer using InDesign.

When you get hungry: There is a long break between the competition and awards ceremony (11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.). There are restaurants on campus that will be open for the day. We will also have a list nearby dining options. New for this year, we will have a College Connection session as well as a keynote speaker.
