Ok, well in interest of the next mozcamp meeting.

Here are some areas we can focus on that aren't just entirely based on
openkomodo..haha

Upstream patches:
----------------------------
So some ideas were having our own tree where we host these patches, so
they are immediately available to the companies using mozilla on a
regular basis.
We can also do some company intercommunication to identify areas of
the tree that need work, and maybe just share those patches between
the interested parties, and wait for the patches to get approved on
the main tree.

Optimizing the Build process:
-------------------------------------------
Ways to build the tree without having to recompile things that aren't
currently being used.
Some methods include using ccache & distcc to alleviate build times.
Shane also noted the activestate method of doing their builds, but I
sort of got lost in the explanation as it was a bit beyond my area of
comfort.

Dev Process:
-------------------
Well helping the over dev process, this would include tools and
techniques that can help everyone out.
Maybe some common helper libraries that the companies can share to
avoid having to re-invent the wheel, or speed up eachothers workflows.

MozPad/XulRunner:
-----------------------------
Ways to help around the Xulrunner project(or is it mozpad). This is
pretty open, but it'd be nice to help this process get a little more
streamlined so the public can start using this more, and possibly get
the community back 'into it'.
Not everything has to be a browser. I also remember at mozcamp
someone asked about 'offline' applications. Which I think is totally
valid.

Documentation:
-----------------------
MDC is great, but there are areas that need updating. Who's allowed
to help back with this?

New Technology & R&D:
------------------------------------
New technologies that haven't been adapted to work in mozilla yet, or
new ideas, etc.
Just innovation.

Thx :)

I think two of the big ones are build systems and more collaboration around xulrunner.  Collaboration on bugs for companies/products using xulrunner would help raise priority on these particular items - which will help more than just waiting for the bugs to land.  The more people share the issue the higher priority it will get.

Would anyone be interested in developing some small xulrunner-based application at the MozCamp?  We could set aside a couple hours to hack on it.

I think that’s a great idea actually… mainly for people who don’t yet have experience working on xulrunner-based apps.

The issue though, is keeping the scope small enough to complete it, but also enough work so that everyone interested on hacking it has something to do.
Would require some planning.
Build process could even be part of it.

There's also the possibility of taking an existing xulrunner app to the next level or something.

+1! I haven't done much of that, and I doubt my limited experience in
the Komodo source base translates perfectly. I'd also like to see if I
can hack up some basic tools for helping xulrunner development in
Komodo, beyond UI preview.

I think that is a great Idea.

App Ideas:
 - Network Poker game :)
 - Another Twitter app
 - Image Viewer (might become the next iPhoto?)

We could also just create some extensions for those who don't have much mozilla experience.

On another note I think it would be interesting to look at a bunch of build processes from current applications like Songbird, Flock, Komodo, etc. We can see how each one does what it needs to do and maybe pick up some ideas that would help.

I like.

what about something that uses JSon to connect to a service of some sort.
(just shooting ideas here)

Also would possibly allow us to start working on mozilla hack days, you know?...get our respective companies to do a hack day once a month or something.

Yup. I was thinking a Twitter app will cover all basics and it's simple
enough to get done in a short amount of time. It has a nice REST API
which supports JSON, anything beyond polling of basic twitter data is a
bonus. The rest I'm sure some of us (myself included) will be happy to
hack on in our spare time to improve it. That all said, I'm happy with
whatever we MozCampers decide to do - this is cool stuff!

Things we'd cover if we went the Twitter client route:

Setting up build system for xulrunner
- includes applying any patches to get working; this is where you
xulrunner-based folk can chime in (ActiveState/Songbird/etc)

Getting familiar with the xulrunnersource
- How does my application run?
- How to deploy it?
- Where do my js/xul files go?

Creating the foundation
- Create a basic hello world app
- Building on top of that and connecting to services via JSON
- .. etc.. bonus!

The point of all this is not necessarily to build a solid working
product, but to learn from each other... and maybe even document it for
others to follow :)

Mark.

Ooh new idea, we could fix an old app too, Chatzilla, make it run on
xulrunner properly like Songbird does :).

I was thinking the same thing with that IM app.
The one that the guy did on libpurple.

Yes I have used that before, I was suggesting we create it as a bundled app with xulrunner like Songbird or Firefox.
