The First Steps:

Hello Northwestern Formula Fans! Another week has passed which means another weekly update. We've been busy over here getting started on our work -- projects have been assigned and initial sub team meetings have been had. Our executive board has been hard at work staying in contact with members who will be working over the Summer. We have had several meetings over the past week planning NFR26's electrical architecture, from power delivery, to CAN routing, sensor integration, and accumulator electronics.

The planning done in these meetings allows our entire electrical division to operate from a shared base of understanding, crucial to developing a well integrated machine.

In other design news, this Sunday is our deadline for initial budgeting and design requirements. This year we intend to place extra focus on having a core set of requirements which we design around for each project. This approach allows us to evaluate all of our decisions based on how they will enable us to achieve our requirements. Additionally, at the end of the year we will be able to compare our finished product with these requirements and see how successful we have been, providing us with yet another data point to learn from.

An Accumulator Update:

As you may remember from last week's update, we faced a number of false faults at competition. I'm happy to report that in the 3 weeks following our return from competition we have confirmed that our accumulator is sitting healthily at the exact same state of charge we left comp with. In previous years we have faced issues with the accumulator passively draining more quickly than anticipated, so it is great news to see that our updates to our battery management system have prevented this.

Meet Our Chief!

The first exec member I'll introduce in detail: Benji Sobeloff-Gittes!

benji picture.png

Benji is a senior from Moscow, Idaho studying Mechanical and Computer engineering. He started on Suspension as a freshman, where he worked on hubs, uprights, tire analysis, and vehicle dynamics modeling. As a sophomore, he began working on the car's electrical systems and developed the team's custom traction inverter. He continued working on the inverter and was the team's Vehicle Integration Lead as a junior.

This year he will be our Chief Engineer, leading the team's technical direction. Benji has worked on almost every part of our cars in some capacity and is highly suited to a position with such wide scope.

When not working on Formula, you can find Benji looking at pictures of hedgehogs and feeding his online chess addiction.

We are all very excited to see what Benji can do in this new position!
