Hi All

Next Monday (14th Sept) I start my first Code Club which I am really excited about. What I am wondering is how do you all handle student logins and saving work?

I am told by the Head that all PC's already have Scratch installed, but I suspect it's probably version 1.4 rather than 2.0. In my head I am already favouring the online version so as the interface matches the instructions as much as possible. In which case the students will need a login to save their work.

So how do you all do it, single account which you log them into? a login per student? Something else?

The Scratch forums mention an educator login but this feature seems to have not been discussed since Earlier this year and their is no mention of it in the latest Scratch documentation.

Thanks in advance.

Best Regards
Rowan

Hi... Last year we created online accounts for all the children with our codeclub gmail as "parent".  We created them with their 1st name plus the school name.

This year we are giving them all an id number and they will create an account during the 1st lesson using the school and their id with the codeclub gmail as "parent" and with all the same passwords.

Doing it this way to make it easier for us to logon if necessary to check work and allows them to access it at home to continue their work, do extra projects or just to show their parents.

We have also set up email addresses with same ids and passwords and a reset to the codeclub email for future work with trinket and the like where we have to have email addresses.

We may well delete the scratch accounts at the end of the year for the next intake to recreate (if possible) but will keep the email addresses for the next lot.

I ran through the volunteer training on the website yesterday and learnt a few things!  One of those things was that you should discuss with the school whether how you decide to set it all up fits in with the schools esafety/elearning policies.  We've just been getting on and doing it up til now!

Cheers
Lisa

I setup a whole bunch of logins on the Scratch website using the name of our club followed by the name of a sweet (twix, mars, rolo, etc). I'm going to give out these usernames at our first session (next Thursday) and write down who got each one.

I'm with you Rowan. I want to be using Scratch 2.0 and giving the kids the opportunity to share their work. But do be ready to fall back to 1.4 if necessary. One school I run a club at had very slow internet access and getting everyone logged into the web version of Scratch all at the same time brought everyone to a standstill.

Thanks John, I hadn't considered slow internet access when using the web version. I'll see what the school have to say on this when I go there later.

Cheers

Thanks Lisa, I think I'll probably do the same with a master account and create sub accounts for each pupil.

Cheers

Hiya Rowan, I've gone for a few accounts all with the same parent and password approach too. It's the school name followed by a number and so there's about 4 kids using each. They just save the project with their name afterwards and haven't had any problems with that approach. I've got a new set of children this year so will just reuse the existing accounts with the new kids. I also have an account I use, which is under just the school name, where I put finished versions of the projects and have a couple of studios so that I can put great examples from the kids in them and we link to them on the school website. The internet connection at school is great but getting things installed properly seems to take ages so we use the online option though Scratch 1.4 is installed on most of the laptops already so we have a back up.

Thanks Liz

I visited the school on Friday and thankfully they have the off-line editor installed, so for the time being, this week anyway, I am going to let them use that. I'll ponder how to proceed in the future with regard to getting their projects to them so they can work on them at home at least.

Thanks again,
Rowan
