Cow Bay is quite a multifest. But this year looks like it might become a F-31 fest!!
Big Broderna is not back from Alaska but little Broderna is coming, the F-24, and its for sale by the way everyone!
A great deal for a really well set-up boat.
Accepting offers at Cow Bay!!

Sounds like I'd be canon fodder.  But the fun is in the sailing and the party.  I kinda don't need to win.  The race combines nicely with some cruising in the Gulf Islands or beyond.

Isn't Big Broderna in Anacortes?  I'm sure they haven't had their fill of racing yet.  And what about Moxie's new Vancouver owner.  Sounds like he'd be someone to bring into the northern fold if he isn't already.  In the Lightning fleet we'd be calling each other weekly to generate interest.  That is easier with the critical mass size fleet racing we had at CYC every Thursday night.

You going to Cow Bay Vince?  Anyone else?

And Congrats to Nels too.  Am a tracker junkie, though I am down to once or twice a day now.  This is the only race I have ever followed, this and last year, and I really think it is cool.  Sadly at my age I would only be interested in being in the cruise mode on a larger and well staffed boat.

Damn.  I think I’d be “reserved” too.  Try events like Cow bay:  http://www.cowbay-regatta.ca/2016/index.htm

Flat water, nice breeze, party at night.   No infections.

Vincent, glad to hear you were keeping tabs on us.  We had Madrona in sight for most of the race sometimes close, most of the time we could just see their sails in the distance, in the last 24 hours of the race the wind came up strong out of the south, we hoisted the big Spin and were off to races, I think we clocked in at 21kts for a while.. We buried all three hulls into the back sides of fairly large waves at least a dozen times before, throttling back to our screacher….tough for a mono to keep up with that.

We had a great time in the race and I know my crew can’t wait to do it again, I’m a little more reserved.   Some how I got a pretty serious Staph infection in both my hands at the end of day 3, powered through most of the race with a high fever.  When we hit Ketchikan, I went directly to the ER with 103 temp,  intervenes antibiotics and all night stay….     I’m better now but it took almost 2 weeks.

I’m thinking I might sail again…J

Hi Nels—

Congratulations on your third place in the R2AK.   Perhaps because I also sail an F31, your achievement looms particularly large to me.

To sail hard as you did, short handed, day and night, in every condition, for 4 days, 16 hours and 30 minutes…

My hat is permanently off to you.

And I must say, the fact that you beat Madrona was particularly sweet.   We have been chasing them for years.

I hope the experience has not put you off sailing entirely!

Best Regards,

Vince DePillis

So... not sure it is possible... but in case it is:

Can anyone give me some specifics on Cow Bay logistics?

Anyone sail straight up from Seattle?  If so, how long does it usually take?  We can usually get from Seattle to Sucia in around 12 hours.  I would probably have to stop in Friday Harbor to get one of those security numbers since I do not have one for this year yet and that timing might change things a bit.  I assume most people pass through Canadian customs at Bedwell Harbor... is that a 24 hour phone in deal?

Anyone trailer from Seattle?  Tsawwassen ferry I would suppose... seems like you could do that in a day with no mishaps.

Is there a grocery store within walking distance?

What is the current Canadian Beer Exchange Rate?  Still favoring US?  :)

We make a cruise of it and are leaving Wednesday the 27th.    If in a hurry, maybe sail all day Thursday into the night, and clear in at Sydney.  I think that would be more direct than going to Pender.   70 miles as the crow flies, maybe 80 with the turns in the sound.   Leisurely transit to Cow bay on Friday, arrive in afternoon with plenty of time to get settled.    I suspect that Sydney has a 24 hour phone in thing as well, but you’d have to check.

Anyone trailer from Seattle?  Tsawwassen ferry I would suppose... seems like you could do that in a day with no mishaps.  Yep, there is boat ramp just north of town.

Is there a grocery store within walking distance?

There is a place that sells some food.  Would not call it a “grocery Store.”   But you can avoid starvation.

Hi Jeff,
Depending on your time availability and whether the boat is already on a trailer or in the water, you could sail from SEA or trailer to Bellingham or Anacortes and sail from there in 1 day. You could take the ferry but those are $$$ with a boat trailer. By the time you go through the border and wait in the ferry line, you won't save all that much time vs from B'ham.

Bed well is a 24 HR phone, and the usual entry point. Coming home go through Roche from 8am-8pm or Friday Harbor if off hours. They don't take kindly to showing up at 8:30pm in Roche.

There is a small market and a number of shops, restaurants and a great little bakery within easy walking distance, although a full grocery is a short drive.

Beer exchange definitely favors US BYOB, but there is a customs limit.

Hope that helps!

I see your auto notice about being gone til Aug 14.  Are you cruising the boat after Cow Bay during that time?  That is the one week we have where we are thinking about a quick trip up to the Gulf Islands.  If so it would be fun to meet up.

Do you guys get your Homeland Security number (whatever the official name for that number is...) before you go up or do you get it in transit?

Hi Jeff
I believe you are referring to the Customs and Border Protection decal that is required for boats over 30 ft.   You get it before you leave because it takes time to get it.   Linda got the one for One World while I was in Grenada and I think it took about 2-3 weeks.  Don't wait.   It is mailed to you.
We both have NEXUS Cards, so we clear back into the US by phone on the water.   The Decal number is required from us and it's required if at a port of entry.   Information on where to display it is with the decal I believe.  Mine was on the aft end of the slider on Moxie and over the sliding glass doors on One World.

Go to.  https://dtops.chb.dhs.gov or search for the DTOPS website.
You must create an account.  You will likely find it pretty simple because I was able to do it.
Once the account is created, follow the prompts to purchase the decal.   SAVE THIS INFORMATION as you will need it next year.   Ignore the transponder information, you want the decal.
You will log in with your user ID and password.
IF it is your 1st time click "Register New Account".  Only create one account or you will have problems (Yes, I created two and it was a pain correcting it).   Regardless of what it seems, next year you will be an "Existing DTOPS User".
SAVE that account number. You will use it next year.
Now just follow the prompts.  Pretty easy as I only got lost a few times.

Any questions just ask.

Another thing Jeff.   When you enter Canada, do so at a Port of Entry.   Everyone but the captain stays on the boat and he takes the necessary documentation (Passports) and walks up the dock to either a Customs Office or a sign with a telephone number to call.   They will take your information, ask a few questions and assign you an entrance number.   They may ask you to stay around for half an hour and if no one shows up, you are good to go.
They told me to enter that into the ship's log (to which I went , Huhh? and remained silent).   I write it on a piece of yellow electrical tape and stick it on the back face of the slider.   In the unlikely event of being boarded, they like to see the number displayed.   The yellow tape stood out against the white slider and they could see it as they meandered by.  If you do launch at Blaine, you will need to clear Customs at a US POE.

I have never been asked for the Canadian entrance number by US Customs on returning but if they ever did, it is right there on the yellow tape.

btw,  Cowichan Bay is not a Canadian Port of Entry, as far as I know.

When we went to Cow Bay, I trailered to Blaine and launched.   White Rock is right across the Border and is an easy place to Clear into Canada.   There is a small Customs dock (a float and watch your depth) at the end of the City pier and a green sign telling you what to do.   Just give them a call.   Same drill, only the captain off the boat.
Do NOT try to reenter the US at Blaine!   If the US Coast Guard says it is OK, US Customs doesn't know about it and it will spoil the afternoon.   Clear at Point Roberts but check their hours of operation.

Last time we entered Canada, we heard a rumor that Cabbage Island (east of Tumbo Is and NW of Sucia) was a Port of Entry.   So, Linda called Canadian Customs who asked when we would be there (best estimate).   She said about an hour and C Customs gave her the clearance number and said to hang around Cabbage Is.  for a half hour and if no one showed up, to continue...we were cleared.   I don't think it mattered that we both had our Nexis cards.

For those who don't know, NEXIS (NEXUS?) is a joint US/CANADA pre-checked security clearance.   You promise to follow the rules and prove you are upstanding people.   However, if you do something that ain't right, the fines and or penalties are prodigious.

One other thing, "Nothing significant" is not a recommended answer to any US Customs question.

If you order it on line, you will get a receipt.  Print it and take it with you.  The customs guy at Friday harbor told me he would accept that in lieu of the actual sticker.

Just wondering out loud because I have never done any of this…  What if one were to trailer into Canada and clear border control and customs there?  Would that be easier than doing it on the water?  Or because our boats are US flagged, would we have to check them in anyway once on the water?

Interesting question.  We never did anything after clearing at the border when we trailered up to Lund (Desolation Sound).  Don't know if we were supposed to.
We routinely launched at Blaine because of the proximity to White Rock, the very accommodating harbor staff, simple and cheap parking and the proximity to the Gulf Islands (Active Pass is nearly a straight shot if you just clip the marker buoy off Pt Roberts).   Prevailing winds are usually favorable and there's usually more good sailing to or from there than bad (based only on the numerous trips we've done from there).
