In case some of you don't know, there's going to be a Neel 43 trimaran at the boat show this week. It's available for charter at Windworks in Shilshole.

Thanks Margaret.  There is a lot of controversy surrounding that brand but I'm interested in seeing it sometime.  It won't be at the show though, unless a free ticket lands in my lap.

Thanks Margaret.

I think I will try to check it out… is the Wright Yachts boat?  Interesting that it is in charter… that might give me a chance to see how it sails.  I have always wondered how it compares to similar size cats.  My guess is that it is somewhat better in performance than a typical charter cat but maybe less so than a more performance cat w boards.
Anyone on this list know?

I have seen a post or two on the forums that the Neel is somewhat more performance than a typical charter cat.  I don't know the degree of improvement nor what year or length they were speaking of.

In half jest; maybe interested club members could pool a few nickels together and charter it for a couple low season hours and do the challenge course for the fun of it.  Maybe in conjunction with Presto, eh Joe?

Yesterday I was at the boat show and spent quite a bit of time looking at the Neel 43. Rob Wright is the dealer and is selling these boats, but the one at the show is not for sale. Only for charter seems to be owned by
Windworks. I just missed Rob. He had left for home. The broker who was there was the windworks guy. He said he sailed the boat last winter in Wind of 30 kn ..,, top speed was 12 kn full main and head sale downwind following sea in Puget sound between Shilshole and Ludlow.
My problem is I just didn’t like the boat. I didn’t like the layout , The visibility, the helm,
Or the performance. INMOH Joe and Sue‘s boat is so much better than the Neel in so many ways I can’t get to the details and reasons without writing a book.

They are not my ‘cup of tea’ but they seem to perform pretty well.

A Neel 47 beat and Outremer 51 in the ARC.

We did the ARC in 2022 on an ORC50 and there were a couple of Neel’s tris, a 43 and 47.   The owners seemed pretty happy with them and they performed ok-ish pointing straight downhill but the motion looked pretty uncomfortable in big seas from what we saw.   They finished significantly behind us and the Outremer 55’s but head of everything else - the arc is such a mixed bag though as everyone is sailing to different levels - and its all downwind ;)  🤷‍♂️

cheers

There are too many variables in the ARC for results to be meaningful.

Neels were available when Sue and I were shopping, but the design and layout didn't work for us (personal opinion). The subsequent concerns with construction and quality control should give anyone pause. There are a lot of them in the Caribbean charter fleet and a lot of them for sale, perhaps as a function of the charter business.

Some admittedly cherry picked numbers from our Seattle Challenge Course attempt that correspond with the Neel's numbers :
Time 2:25:33 PDT
Boat speed 14.501
Apparent wind angle -118.2
Apparent wind speed 21.36
True wind angle -142.6
True wind speed 30.97
True wind direction 200.2

FWIW, the highest true wind we recorded was 49.35kts and highest boat speed was 23.05kts.
Presto's accommodations, build quality, and performance suit us, but it's not everyone's taste.

Straight downhill… I am guessing that they did not have downwind sails on board?  Seems most Neels like most cruising cats right out of the box are only coming with a dacron Main and Jib.  Even the brand new Nauticat 45 we chatted in the BVI this winter was sorely lacking in downwind sails.  IMy guess is that by the time They paid for all thethey paid for all the cruising amenities and the boat they ran out of money for things that actually make it act like a sailboat .

I like the Neel layout for cruising.  You can see stuff from the inside.  I even like the cabin on the upper level because then I can take a quick peek in the middle of the night and see if everything‘s OK.  Not sure I would like it if it was a live aboard though.

I would like to see some real comparisons with a real quiver of sails

Yeah, I’m not sure, we could not see them by the time we put kites up and had flown home by the time they got in ;)     I don’t think they were wing on wing as they had some gybing angle but it was very shallow, from memory I think every time we looked they were hanging at a steady 8kts with a high VMG % as other boats were zig zagging around them.  They were keeping up good averages though, I would imagine they would have to have had some flying sails up as, overall, it wasn’t that windy.

As others have said - impossible to draw conclusions from the ARC  but your anecdotes resonate!

I'm surprised that people would expect a charter boat to come with anything but a headsail and mainsail.  Charters typically have no idea how to really sail a boat much less put sails away properly.

Completely from my personal view...

I'm a sailor.  When I charter... I want to sail.

I will say that the folks at the fuel dock were shocked that we had not used any fuel.  I have to admit that we saw our share of boneheads and that must be a constant headache for the charter and insurance companies.

Surely there is a niche for vetted sailors to have a full quiver of sails.  When a multihull charter company comes along that does that I will be there.

:)
