Hi all,
I am curious what trimaran, with all black sails, went past Boston Harbor Marina near the mouth of Budd Inlet last Thursday, July 23. They were going impressively fast and I got one burst of speed on video where the streak of white water from the stern is longer than boat. Anyone know?

I too am curious. Ive been ahead of them before and watched them eat distance between us at an impressive rate. Granted im off the wind with no screecher or kite aloft in a stock F24 but if we hadn’t both chose to change courses before we reached Olympia they would have passed us easily. Next time it happens…I’ll find out.

Btw, they're not based out of Oly.

Colin and Neil, was it a Corsair 31 with a blue hull?  If so that was likely Tri To Be Nice out of Tacoma.  Shawn and Jess are active members.

I don't think so. It looks like white hulls with dark bottom paint and an interesting cabin structure. Maybe a Dragonfly?

Here is the video link. Recommend muting our silly voiceover chatter.

Colin, I think you are right.  I think it is a Dragonfly 800 built 1987 to 2005.  It sparked a synapse in my brain because there was one moored just a quarter mile from my house for many years (and then showed up on Craigs list and sold 10 or 15 years ago).  I wonder if its the same boat; it had that red "raccoon mask" around the cabin and windows and I think I detected a hint of red, in the same place, in your video.  I can't tell if its the early version with aluminum tube beams like the one near me or the later version with the fiberglass swing wing.   The one near me seemed like a very light and sporty boat, somewhat different than the more substantial, newer, and larger, Dragonflys.  It certainly did zip along in your video when hit by a gust!  If I had a better moorage arrangement I'd consider having one, (or an F24 or similar).

Just a follow up note.  If you Google “Magic Hempel” you’ll find the fascinating story of Quornings first tri.  I’ve heard that boat is still sailing.. somewhere?

I have a Dragonfly 800 in Anacortes but the boat in question weren’t me.  Don’t know of any other 800s currently in PS or anywhere near.  If there is one I’d love to meet them.  I bought mine new in Denmark and had it shipped to Anacortes in 2005.  It’s the folding type and “cruise” version.  The demountable aluminum tubing ones were Quornings first early experimental concepts and were lighter and sportier.  Then  believe there was, or is, a Canadian company that replicated the design and made their own.  Love the boat but plan to sell after this summer.  I’m always happy to show or discuss it.  Also would love to hook up with any friendly multihullers on the water PS or SJs in Sept.  Not a member of NWMA but recently introduced to Darren and Ginny, and subsequently got hooked into the thread.  Mike Banner.  360-333-0296

Agree that's a Dragonfly 800.  Going nicely.  There are a couple of Dragonfly 25's on Bainbridge, in Eagle Harbor, I think.  I could put you in touch with the owners if interested.  I have a Dragonfly 28 Performance in Shilshole (P5) , in which we just did the Down the Sound race to Tacoma and back.  Lots of fun in the brisk winds on Saturday!

Glad you are on it Ginnie Jo.  I hope Micheal can come to some of our gatherings.  It would be great to meet him and see his boat.

We need to get Maggie and William on the case of the black sail Boston Harbor streaker.  Maybe Rod Tharp knows who it is.
