Group,

I may need to move to Hawaii four a couple of years where I wont be able to take my F-27 with me. I am curious about options for storing her.

1. Long term covered storage. Does anyone have a good place to keep the boat, I'm willling to trailer it a couple hundred miles if needed to get the rates down. I worry that if its outside a leak might develop and lead to serious mold.

2. Rent it. Has anyone ever rented/loaned their boat to someone. I like this option since it would keep someone looking after it. I wouldn't really be worried about getting any income, but worry that the person wouldn't take care of her, and who would cover damage from a potential accident

3. Sell it. This is probably the best option, but my family has a strong emotional bond to the boat so its my last option.

4. Ship it, this is cost prohibitive in that it would represent a significant portion of the boats total value.

Thanks,
Ben

Not to be selfish about it, but we will really miss you sailing in our fleet.

10 years ago I was looking for inexpensive place to store my F31 trailer.   IIRC the going rate was around 4-500/mo.  If I went further, like Thurston county, it was 2-300.  This was uncovered for a ~30' trailer.

I put an add in CL for cheap storage and a guy with 8 acres in Monroe replied and we settled on $30/mo.  I think that was lucky.  I've paid him nearly the value of the trailer over the years but I wanted the trailer to travel to distant places and my plan was to sell sooner and move to a bigger multi.  Neither happened.  I'll have to have the brakes, bearings and new tires redone, hopefully with out any expensive hitches, before it is ever road worthy.   Probably have to redo the bunks and other misc. stuff.  So I think I came out behind on keeping the trailer.  Good luck on your search.

I was looking for indoor RV storage a within the last year or two and I think $250-300/mo is achievable, obviously a bit of a drive outside of any urban area - but not necessarily as far as you'd think. I'm pretty sure I found a few options within King County, for example.

However - looking at Craigslist now I'm not seeing as much available, and they aren't advertising prices. I suspect it is time of year - lots of people looking to store their boats and RVs about now. It seems like many/most places offer month-to-month also - so there aren't year-long leases cycling, just people paying for 7-8 months of winter basically - and high demand right now.

For whatever it is worth, my "dry moorage" mast-up outdoor parking space in Shilshole runs ~$450 currently (based entirely on LWL(!), not LOA or trailer tongue!! Which is really nice) so I'm sure you can find more-for-less than that somewhere.

Ben,

Did you consider option 5, sail Entourage there? According to Wikipedia, in 1987 an F-27 finished the Trans Pac doublehanded in 12 days, and two others made the same passage in the 1990s.

You've even recently surveyed the route.

There is a website peerstorage.co which is kind of like Airbnb for storage. I haven’t used it but someone might have space in a barn somewhere.

I would be interested in discussing a rental option and what I could do to take care of your boat. Since R2Ak this year I have been looking for an opportunity to sail more multi hulls  given I live aboard a big monohul purchasing another boat would lead to divorce. ;)

I’m currently renting uncovered space for my trailer (trailer only, the boat is in the water) in Snohomish County through a listing on neighbor.com. It’s uncovered, unfenced, unmonitored, so not the safest (it’s in the back of a cannabis shop business…).
You might find better space if you’re open to more areas that I was at the time.

Hi Ben:
I am a NWMA member. I own a Marina in Bothell with Dry Storage. Everybody is on one year contracts.  Two years would be fine.$200 mo. 10% discount for paying the full year in advance. Onsite Manager Runs the place and Lives there. You would need to provide your own portable garage type cover for the boat. Costco sells them. Waiting list but I can get you in if it works for you.

Hi Ben,

Your choice #2 caught my eye.   If you are renting it, my guess is your insurance is void. At least that’s what I was told when I asked about doing something similar.   The insurance viewed it as a commercial enterprise and I can understand their concerns.

I would be less concerned about the renter taking care of it and more concerned with him beating the crap out of it.

Another option that could be a lot of fun might be to sail it to Hawaii.    Best check your insurance on that option, too.

Cheers,  Martyn Adams

Get away from the marinas, rv storage is less than half of that.

All,

Thanks for all the sentiment and advice, both on this list and via DM. I have a lot to think over, but covered storage out west seems like a good option.

Thanks,
Ben

I think if you wanted to rent it out you'd want to create an LLC, transfer the boat to the LLC, and then insure it as a business.

Any boats in charter, or club boats (with individual owners) are done this way.  The person(s) chartering/renting will be required (by the chartering agreement) to carry their own insurance ALSO.

I don't know if they'd be willing to help per se, but this is how many (not all) boats are managed in the Seattle Sailing Club - and probably others. The affiliated brokerage typically helps owners buy boats that are already in the club, but owned by the club, or outside the club and place them in the club, or take them out etc, including establishing a business, getting insurance, agreements etc. From talking with a few folks who own/have owned boats with Seattle Sailing Club - the entire process is fairly easy from their perspective.

SSC probably wouldn't be interested in having this kind of boat in the club, but perhaps the owner (who is a fantastic guy!) could send you over some example paperwork, or at least hook you up with their lawyer if you want to try this yourself.

Stephen, With all due respect for what you have done with multies, I'd be impressed if you came up with any storage of a 30' item for half of the $200 that Jim offered.
