Subject: Going to Alaska! Do you want to join us?

We are going to Alaska!

As many of you know I have been monitoring the situation with the Canadian border for the last year. We have talked to many who successfully made a fast transit through British Columbia  to SE Alaska. I think we have the way to do this with entry into Canada through CBSA.

On May 10 we will do this as a flotilla of 8 boats with me in the lead following a strict protocol and float plan. I am planning a 7-8 day float plan. Long days at about 8 knots.  We will stop only to anchor and will not get off our boats. We will have 3 fuel stops available but you should plan to provision for all meals on board. From what we have been told CBSA agrees that this is a transit trip and allowed. There is always a chance either the group or an individual boat could be denied entry to transit through Canada, in which all flotilla fees would be refunded.

Once we get to Ketchikan, we will slow the trip down and enjoy a passage to Juneau stopping to see the glaciers and plenty of whales and wild life. After Juneau, you can continue on your own to see the best of SE Alaska and we will be happy to help you plan an itinerary to see other memorable locations in Alaska. This section of the trip will be about 8 days.

I will then be leaving my boat  in Juneau for about 2 weeks to attend a family wedding. Then I will return and start south for an express transit through BC and back to Washington. If you are ready to return by then you can join me for the return transit passage though I do recommend spending the summer in Southeast Alaska.

The cost for the flotilla is $3500. This covers supplying you with all the relevant cruising guides and a 2 – day seminar on cruising to Alaska covering customs procedures and our recommendation on all the great places to plan to visit while you are in Southeast Alaska. The seminar will be presented on May 1 & 2 via Zoom.

The flotilla fee is covering our extensive planning and arrangements for the trip to Juneau. We will need a deposit of $1000 to reserve your position for the trip. $2500 will be due May 3rd. If we are not allowed to go or we have less than 5 boats signed up, your flotilla fee will be refunded minus the cost of the books and the seminar.

We will be sending you more information and the trip checklists once we receive your deposit.

This trip is a significant passage. We would like to make sure you are ready and your boat is ready to go for this transit. This will probably be the longest trip many of you have ever done. Assume you will cruise some 300-400 hours this summer if you elect to go. This will also be the hardest and longest you have pushed your vessel. Our pre-trip maintenance check list is extensive and we will have to assume your vessel has been fully serviced including key areas like the cooling system. We want to avoid any breakdowns especially on the transit trip going up and coming back through BC.

If you have already made other plans to go to Alaska or are planning to go next year, consider taking our Cruising to Alaska Seminar on May 1 and 2. We will be presenting all of the information you need to plan a special Alaska trip including our recommendations for an Express Transit border clearance. To sign up:

UPDATE: Our annual Waggoner Flotilla to Alaska mentioned here is NOT happening this year.
We look forward to going again in 2022, after COVID restrictions and concerns end.

However the seminar this weekend is still on.
