bowsprits?

Hi all,

    I might finally get my TT720 a used Asym cruising spinnaker this winter. The luff length of the sail I am thinking of getting is 30', about 18 inches longer than my forestay, which I think will be OK for deep angles (apparent wind 100-155 degrees). In order to someday be able to pull the luff tight and sail hotter angles with it I could maybe use a bowsprit (and a spinnaker halyard point welded on the mast above the forestay...). Does anyone have an old bow sprit or spar that they would give away? I think a length 3-6 feet might work.

 I'm also looking for advice about how to mount one, ideally folding to keep my overall length in my slip the same. Here is what my bow looks like, unfortunately the central best spot is taken by a roller for the trailer winch rope when mast raising or lowering. The roller is about an inch forward of the horizontal step part of the bow pulpit.

Colin, is an old windsurfer mast or rowing shell strong enough?  Plenty of those around free, especially a 3-6' piece. Member Mark D. may have a line on the oars.  Used to be racers were always bending their Laser masts.  Check Sail Sand Point, they used to have tons of laser masts.  Go on a slow rainy day when the manager is there.  I did that and offered a small donation if they had a top section for me.  The manager was more than glad to pull one out of the back room for me. 

 

I might have something but I'll have to look around to see.  Is that anchor roller off center?  If so you could duplicate the fitting on the F31 to the open side.  If not you could remount the roller to accommodate.   Aim it so the end of the pole is on the boat's centerline when in sailing position.  Works great with whisker stays to the amas and a releasable hold down stay to a low bow eye just above the waterline.

Colin,

I have an old aluminum spinnaker pole that came with my boat, but is too big for the boat and just doesn't work well.  I never use it and was thinking of getting rid of it.  It might work as your bowsprit.  It's on Dock N at Shilshole.  Let me know if you want to take a look at it.

I have a piece of 2" aluminum tube (an old Dwyer mast section from my trampolines) that would probably work, lashed to your anchor roller.
