Dear all,

I write to invite you to our annual Guitars of Western concert on Friday May, 15 @ 7:30pm in the PAC Concert Hall. It’ll showcase the incredible variety of creative activities afoot in Western’s guitar area with arrangements, compositions, and performances of solo and ensemble music for plucked strings. The concert is free and open to all.

Our punny theme “Bach to the Future” is also a perfectly literal description of the musical bookends for the evening: we’ve curated a program of works as old as the preludes from The Well Tempered Clavier (reimagined by and for the students) and as new as the just-dry ink on several student compositions completed this year. See here for details.

In case you can’t make it the evening-of, the guitar ensemble has two open rehearsals which you are welcome to attend:

Friday, May 8 @ 4pm in PAC 047

Wednesday, May 13 @ 4pm in PAC 047

We hope you can join us and hear the hard work of the WWU guitarists in action!

Best wishes,

Eli Schille-Hudson

Last night's concert was excellent Eli. The program with solo pieces in between two ensemble sets flowed very well. Both the arrangements and the acoustics of the ensemble music was excellent. Every instrument added something to each arrangement and I was pleasantly surprised how balanced the volume levels were between the steel and nylon string instruments. Can't wait for the next ensemble concert!

What Todd said well. And then some. Specifically,

Having students individually choose a classic, individually arrange for, and then play in, a diverse ensemble of plucked instruments and fellow players — what a rich learning experience in so many ways: history, instruments, collaboration, creative innovation, as well of course just plucking the right note at the right time in the group. Wow!

The solos were exceptional as well — I can’t help thinking that the immersive collaborative experience helped each soloist prepare and perform better as well. At least it looked and felt that way, from just the vibe.

And good for Eli for himself demonstrating in the last ensemble arrangements what he was asking the students to do in the first.

Thanks all, for all!
