BALKAN CABARET in Astoria, OR
Lively and passionate music will be on display SATURDAY DECEMBER 5th, 2009 at the Clatsop Community College Performing Arts Center in ASTORIA as BALKAN CABARET from Seattle WA performs songs and dance music from the Balkan Peninsula.
The group, featuring singer Mary Sherhart, has performed all over the country to packed houses, specializing in heart rending ballads from the musical tapestry of Bulgaria, Bosnia, Serbia, Macedonia and Croatia.
These 'old city songs', woven from the influence of the Ottoman Empire, the cool Adriatic shores and the Danubian plains, provide a backdrop for a fascinating evening of love and joy, sorrow and sadness.
The day begins 3:00 - 5:00 pm with a Culture session giving an overview and personal in depth look into life in the countries of the Balkan Peninsula, followed by a FOLKDANCE session (with Susan Reagel joining the team) preparing all ages for dancing in the aisles in the evening; no previous dance experience needed.
The concert is 7:00 - 9:00 pm with a $5.00 charge for all or any part of the day. All events take place at the CCC PAC, 16th and Franklin, and all ages are welcome. And don't forget, you can indulge in delicious Bosnian food at Drina Daisy Restaurant (where the band and hosts plan on dining Friday evening).
BALKAN CABARET's appearance in Astoria is sponsored in part by a Clatsop Cultural Coalition grant, part of the Oregon Cultural Trust.
