Here you guys go!

These are the specific questions and answers I received:

1. We know we must fill out at least 15 preferences, but can you repeat a preference to increase your chances of getting it? Or do the first 15 have to be completely different?

For instance, if someone knows they want vacation last but doesn't really care about when any of the other rotations are, could he/she just list "Vacation - 3D" for all 15 of their preferences?

1.      Since the preference form treats any duplicate request as the same request, it will not be helpful to preference the same thing more than once.

2. If someone doesn't care when they do a particular block, but know the order that they want to do that block in, can they make their preferences reflect that?

For instance, if someone doesn't care when they do their surgical block, but they know they want to do OB/GYN first, should they make their first 3 preferences to have OB/GYN as 1A, 2A, 3A?

2.      That is a good strategy. After OB as 1A, 2A, 3A, you could preference surgery as  SG 1B, 2B, 3B, and then Surg Subspecialty as 1C, 2C, 3C and so on.

Take home points:
  • You must select at least 15 preferences.
  • Selecting the same preference (same rotation at the same time) will NOT increase your chances of getting that rotation.
  • It doesn't sound like you actually have to select a preference for each rotation (you can if you want to) as long as you have at least 15 selections with different combinations of rotations and times…but I'm going to email one more time to confirm this. I'll let you know if I hear any different.

May the Indy odds be ever in your favor,
Brooke

Continuing on with what Brooke everdeen said, here are a couple other answers

1) We will choose clerkship locations after we are assigned dates

2) In regards to scheduling the vacation month as either an elective of Sub-I:
You will be able to see what electives have openings in May.   Taking the last month of your third year as the fourth year sub-I can be helpful since many of the sub-Is are competitive and can be difficult to schedule.  But, May will very open so you should be able to pick your venue/service.   Downside is that you will be taking probably the most intense of the fourth year courses immediately after completion of the third year.   Sometimes taking more of a break can be good after a grueling third year.  And, your sub-I will be further away from your residency training – and that is one of the primary objectives of the sub-I – to prepare you for residency.
