The Angel Jibril asked the Prophet ﷺ how he and his Companions regarded the people of Badr. He replied “They are the best of us.” Jibril said: “Likewise we regard the angels of the heavens who attended Badr as being the best of us.” They attained this rank because they gave victory to the best of people in the sight of Allah ﷺ.

Remembering Badr
Friday/Saturday, June 1st/2nd (depending on when one began Ramadan), is the 17th day of Ramadan and marks the anniversary of the epic Battle of Badr.

It took place on that day in the second year of the Hijrah. It is one of the most important events in the history of the Ummah, and Allah describes it as
the Day of Discrimination

In Sha`ban of 2 AH both fasting and zakat were made compulsory. The Prophet and his Companions then began fasting Ramadan in intense heat. On a day similar to this all those years ago, the Prophet left his family and home and went out to Badr with around 313 of his Companions. Why did he go out? To give victory to the religion of Allah and to convey the message of his Lord. In spite of the heat and the difficulty of the journey, he continued fasting on some days but he also broke his fast on other days.

On the expedition, he shared a camel with Sayyiduna `Ali and Sayyiduna Mirthad bin Abi Mirthad and they each took it in turns to ride while the other two walked. They said to him:

“O Messenger of Allah, you ride and we will walk.”

He replied ﷺ:

“Neither are you stronger walkers than me, nor am I in less need of the reward than you.”

Here he taught us several lessons. He taught us a lesson in sacrifice and in negation of pride and satisfaction with one’s actions. He displayed his need for the reward of Allah, in spite of the fact that even if he had ridden and let them walk, he would have received the reward for their actions because he was the one that guided them to Allah.

The Companions succeeded because they had the love of Allah and His Messenger in their hearts. More than half of the nights of Ramadan have passed and you have not yet understood this concept. Ramadan has only come so that you can be elevated. This love is the foundation of victory and of honoring one’s covenant with Allah.

NOTE:
The Battle of Badr was won just before dhuhr on the 17th of Ramadan.  We should make du'a right before dhuhr on the 17th.

Click here for a beautiful du'a to say on the 17th day.

Half Way Through Ramadan
Ibn al-Jawzi said, "When the racehorse knows that it is nearing the end of the track it exerts all of its effort to win the race. Do not allow the race horse to be more clever than you. For verily, deeds are judged by their conclusions. So if you didn't do well with welcoming Ramadan then perhaps you will do better bidding it farewell."

Ibn Taymiyyah said, "The lesson lies in perfection of the conclusion of a thing, not in the shortcomings of the beginning of it."

Hasan al-Basri said, “Improve your performance in what is left (of time) and you will be forgiven for that which has already passed. So take special care of the time you have left because you do not know when your soul will be turned over to Allah’s Mercy.”

RAMADAN REMINDERS

  • Voluntary work is like an obligation and an obligation is like 70x extra in Ramadan.
  • Seek Laylatul Qadr starting in the last 10 days of Ramadan.  However, an intelligent believer should be prepared to seek it every day in Ramadan.
  • Some companions held the opinion that the night of power moves throughout the month. Imam al-Hadad holds the opinion that it occurs outside of the last 10 days but most likely during the last 10. Seek it throughout the month.
  • Take care of the needy and those who are overlooked. We should seek those people out and have an awareness of them.
  • One should increase one's recitation of Quran and study-- mudarasa
  • Try to do as much i'tikaf (especially last 10 days) as possible --- put devices aside, even for a few hours. Having some time to focus on Allah is a blessing
  • Historical Events in Ramadan: Fath Makkah was in Ramadan; Battle of Badr was in Ramadan on the 17th.
