Membership
IDEA has a membership officer who will help you through the process of applying to our Executive Committee or
General Council (which meets once every 18 months), to become a member. However, IDEA’s capacity to support its members, develop projects, organise conferences and advocate for pedagogical change depends on the quality of its membership and the officers its members elect. So IDEA’s members carry considerable power. For these reasons, application for membership is not simply a question of criteria, but of shared expectations and responsibilities. But what exactly is an IDEA member?
IDEA's membership
IDEA is an association of national associations working in drama/theatre and education which also welcomes regional and international associations, institutes, networks, organisations and individuals working in drama/theatre and education. We are currently carrying out a
membership review as part of a regular confirmation of the representativity of our national associations, and to review the relevance of our membership categories in the light of the new patterns of affiliation and communication created by the revolution in information and communication technology.
Categories of membership
We currently have two categories of membership:
Ordinary members: Any national association that accepts the aims and agrees to abide by the Constitution of IDEA, that practices internal democracy in the general management and administration of its affairs, and that pledges to fulfill the obligations of its membership can apply to the Executive Committee or to the General Council of IDEA for --Ordinary-- membership. There can be more than one national association in any country. These members have voting rights in the General Council meetings of IDEA.
Associate members: Any group or individual that accepts the aims and agrees to abide by the constitution of IDEA, and practices internal democracy in the general management and administration of its affairs can apply to the Executive Committee or to the General Council of IDEA for
Associatemembership. These members may participate actively in the General Council meetings of IDEA but do not have voting rights. However individual associate members as well and representatives of associate member institutions can be elected to any post in IDEA.
Criteria for Membership
1. IDEA expects its members to support the development of cultural democracy and human rights through drama/theatre and education. IDEA opposes discrimination on the basis of race, colour, national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, age or disability.
2. IDEA expects its members to support the development and advocacy of drama/ theatre and education.
3. IDEA expects its members to pay an annual membership fee, as defined periodically by the General Council, or in a 3-yearly payment at the IDEA world congress.
4. IDEA asks for references from two respected drama/theatre and education institutions or practitioners (preferably from within or known to IDEA), who are familiar with the applicant’s history and can confirm the applicant meets the above criteria. In circumstances where this criterion is difficult to fulfill, IDEA will look for an alternative kind of reference (in the form of a project report or conference presentation).
Responsibilities of IDEA to its members
The Executive Committee of IDEA is committed to actively support its members in the development of projects, curricula, the exchange of ideas and resources, and the protection and affirmation of its members’ cultural and educational human rights. To this end, IDEA will offer or facilitate all available expertise as a consultancy service, and make available its stamp of international approval to members that fulfill our project criteria and can demonstrate our standards of preparation and evaluation. The IDEA site offers a
members-only space for consultancy, up-to-date funding information, and (very soon!) high-quality teaching resources.
Expectations and Responsibilities of IDEA’s members
1. Member associations will inform their own members about IDEA and promote the active interest of their members in the work of IDEA.
2. All members will send an annual report to the IDEA Secretary, highlighting any actions taken to advance the aims of IDEA.
3. All members will send the IDEA Secretary any information which might be useful to the membership of IDEA.
4. Members will strive to participate in General Council meetings, even if by shaping the GC agenda and by proxy, and will inform the IDEA Secretary one month in advance whether they expect to participate.
5. Member associations will appoint an IDEA liaison officer who will take responsibility for all communication with IDEA.
6. Member associations will encourage at least one volunteer to enter IDEA’s working committees.
7. Member associations will respect and practice the ethical principles defined in this site’s registration statement.
