Our Wednesday morning ride group is planning to ride to the Crow &
Gate (about an easy hours ride from Nanaimo) for lunch this
Wednesday. If anyone wants join us, we will be meeting at the ticket
kiosk at the Horseshoe Bay Ferry terminal at 8:00 am. If you think
you can make, let me know.

Charles,

What GPS were you using on the ride we went on in the summer. Are you happy
with its functionality for biking? I am looking for a dual purpose GPS, one
that I can map out routes plus one that I can take on the road when I travel
to other cities for navigating around strange cities in rental cars.

Thanks,

Ken Southam

Hi Ken
I'm using a Garmin Nuvi 255. The current model from Garmin is the 265w
available at Costco for ~$175.00. This
is the low end of the line for GPS receivers. It does not have
bluetooth so it won't auto dial your cell phone and it
has no FM transmitter to activate a car radio but it comes with a
dash/window mount for a car. No bike mount provided.

Aside from that it is an excellent unit. It's accuracy is just as good
as the NAV unit in my Lexus. It will provide voice
directions to anywhere in Canada and the US. I have not tried Mexico.

It uses a standard mini USB connector to a computer for data transfer
and for charging the battery. You can get about
three hours on a charge. In a car you use the cigarette lighter to
power the charger so there is no power problem.

Hi Ken -
John and I have the garmin 750 and we bought the Europe maps
For it this summer - it works all over the world. Ask John Henry about
It. I bought it for him for Christmas last year - It does have blue tooth
And all kinds of other wonderful thing. I think they have probably come
down in price since I purchased it. Sylv

The current version of the 750 seems to be the nuvi 855.   I'd  be willing to pay the extra money if this was my
only GPS.   The bluetooth and FM transmitter make it a much better choice for someone who wants to use it
in a vehicle.

On the other hand they will use extra power when you are riding your bike and have only the battery to rely on.
